West Ham returned to winning ways as they beat Wolves 2-0 to pile the pressure on Bruno Lage.

Gianluca Scamacca was rewarded with a start and he backed it up with a fabulous volley in the 29th minute to ease some of the nerves at the London Stadium.

Jarred Bowen also lifted a weight from his shoulders as his strike in the 54th minute was his first goal involvement of the season.

New signing Diego Costa came off the bench but could not help Lage's woes, with the defeat meaning Wolves remain only one victory this season having scored just three goals.

Bowen spoke at length about ending his goal drought and what that meant to him personally.

He said: "It was my first Premier League goal of the season. It's a massive weight off my shoulders. I had a couple of chances today.

"When you're not scoring sometimes things don't drop for you. But I always do the basics and have the belief. I'm delighted with the goal and victory.

"I don't get caught up with the noise outside."

New signing Scamacca was delighted to net the opener after being handed a start by David Moyes.

He said: "It was amazing. We needed to win. Today we worked very hard, and we needed a victory. Today it was so important to win."

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves spoke strongly about the club's bad start to the season.

He said: "We need to stop talking about performances. We always try to play our best to win but it is not enough. We need to make sure everyone goes on the same path.

"It is time to look to ourselves. What we are doing in the Premier League is not enough. Having the ball is not enough.

"It is in our hands to work on it. We know our quality but in a league like this it is not enough. If you don’t train like you play you will not be able to win enough games at the weekend. The good thing is we still have time to change this."

Moyes was happy with the three points but still suggested his team can improve.

He said: "It was really good. Some of our games have been really close. We've lost a few narrowly and had decisions go against us.

"We got over the line today. I don’t think we played as well today as we have in other games. Two good finishes. It's good those boys are on the scoresheet and hopefully it gives them confidence."

The chances were even but West Ham were clinical when it mattered

Did you know?

West Ham’s victory ended a run of six Premier League home games without a win (D3 L3), and it was their first clean sheet in nine at home since beating Wolves 1-0 in February.

Wolves are winless in eight Premier League away games (D2 L6), last having a longer run without a win on the road in the top-flight since a run of 10 between August 2011 and January 2012.

Wolves have scored just three goals after eight Premier League games this season, their joint-worst return at this stage of a top-flight campaign (also three in 2003-04, when they were relegated).

Gianluca Scamacca became the 161st player to score a Premier League goal for West Ham, with no team having more different goalscorers in the competition (Newcastle also 161).

18 of Jarrod Bowen’s 22 Premier League goals for West Ham have come in home games (82%) — all players to have scored at least 20 times in the competition, only Georginio Wijnaldum (85%) and Michael Carrick (83%) have scored a higher share in home games than Bowen.

Wolves had eight different Portuguese players in their starting lineup — it’s the most different starters from a specific nation outside of England any team has had in a Premier League match.
