Quarter-finals: Switzerland vs Spain, kick-off 5pm (UK time, ITV)

The Krestovsky Stadium plays host to the first quarter-final of Euro 2020 as Switzerland, the conquerors of France, take on Spain in Saint Petersburg.

Few people were expecting the Swiss to be facing La Roja ahead of their respective last-16 ties but Monday’s madness has thrown up an intriguing David and Goliath clash.

With a place in the semi-finals up for grabs, expect these two teams to be involved in another scintillating contest this evening.

Story so far

Switzerland are in the quarter-finals of the European Championship despite winning just one match in normal time.

They kicked their campaign off with a 1-1 draw against Wales, were outclassed by Italy in a 3-0 defeat and needed Xherdan Shaqiri’s brace to help them to a 3-1 win over Turkey to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Given no chance against the reigning world champions, Switzerland went into their match against France with no pressure.

But in what was one of the games of the tournament, Vladimir Petkovic’s side took a shock lead, missed a penalty and then scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to draw level, having looked dead and buried at 3-1 down.

Yann Sommer was the hero in the shootout, saving Kylian Mbappe’s spot-kick to put the Swiss into the next round.

Spain began their campaign with a goalles draw against Sweden and a 1-1 draw with Poland, so there was pressure on Luis Enrique and his players heading into their final group game against Slovakia.

They delivered in style — romping to a 5-0 victory to claim top spot in Group E.

La Roja went from having the bluntest attack to having the most potent one in the competition, becoming the first team in history to score five goals in successive games after their sensational 5-3 win over Croatia in the round of 16.

The unlikely playmaker

Steven Zuber has been key to Switzerland's progress at Euro 2020

No player at Euro 2020 has set up more goals than Steven Zuber.

The versatile Eintracht Frankfurt man registered another assist in the game against France to take his tally to four. He has been a revelation down the left flank in the three matches he has featured in so far.

The 29-year-old left wing-back is an outlet for the Swiss and his delivery into the penalty area causes chaos.

That is something the Spanish have struggled with so far.

Spain’s kryptonite

Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres had issues whenever the ball was played into the box against Croatia.

Mario Pasalic nodded home after a fairly routine run into the penalty area from deep before Unai Simon needed to be at full stretch to thwart Mislav Orsic after a cross was played in from the left.

The Spain keeper also pulled off the save of the game to stop Andrej Kramaric from giving Croatia the lead in extra-time.

Not only do they struggle to deal with crosses but they also struggle to prevent them — Haris Seferovic, the man who scored two headers against France, will no doubt be relishing this encounter.

Pedri pulling the strings

Pass master Pedri is the creative lynchpin of this Spain side

Thiago and Fabian Ruiz have been relegated to the bench because of the performances of Pedri.

The Barcelona maestro has burst onto the scene this season and looks right at home in Luis Enrique’s midfield set-up.

The 18-year-old has yet to register an assist — but it is only a matter of time.

Out of every player at the tournament, he ranks second for passes into the final third (46), seventh for passes into the penalty area (eight) and progressive passes (27), and first for goal-creating actions (five).

Switzerland struggled to contain Paul Pogba. If they stand off Pedri in the same way, they could be in trouble.

Clean sheet woes

Switzerland have conceded eight goals at Euro 2020

Switzerland are yet to keep a clean sheet at the Euros.

As tThey are up against the top scorers in the competition tonight, it is a potential recipe for disaster.

Spain have scored 11 in four outings and have really found their groove in the last two matches.

Publicidad

Shutting out La Roja will be a tough task but it is also the perfect test of their credentials — if Petkovic’s men can keep the free-scoring Spanish at bay, Europe really will start to sit up and take notice.
