Championship leaders Leicester have suffered a severe dip in form recently and will be looking to get back to winning ways when they visit the Stadium of Light on Tuesday to face Sunderland.

The Black Cats have had their own struggles as of late, and the dip in quality and confidence could hamper both sides, and the two may have issues in claiming the initiative in this encounter.

Team news

Mike Dodds took over as caretaker manager for the third time in three years just two weeks ago, and he has yet to register a point on the board since succeeding Michael Beale.

The caretaker boss will be without Patrick Roberts, Niall Huggins, Corry Evans as well as top goalscorer Jack Clarke, who will be out until the end of April with an ankle issue. Bradley Dack and Dennis Cirkin are also not due to return until later this month.

Enzo Maresca has a handful of absentees to contend with for Tuesday’s Championship encounter, with the likes of Ricardo Pereira, Wilfred Ndidi and Dennis Praet all expected to miss out through injury.

However, there is some positive news for the Italian manager as central defender Jannik Vestergaard is once again available for selection after serving a suspension.

The Foxes have won 25 games in the league this season yet are winless in their last three. This has cut their lead at the top of the table to just three points.

Leicester are also the league’s top goalscorers with 71, with the side last failing to find the back of the net against Middlesbrough back in November.

Sunderland’s dip in form has seen them drop to 10th in the table, nine points away from the coveted top six.

The Black Cats last beat the Foxes at home in 2017, when both sides were in the Championship, and they lost the reverse fixture at the King Power Stadium 1-0, with a James Justin header sealing all three points for Leicester.

Prediction

With both sides desperate to put an end to their recent league woes, it is hard to call which side, if any, can come away from Tuesday’s contest with the victory.

However, goals for both sides could be in the offing given that four of Leicester’s last five league games have seen both teams find the back of the net, with the same also true for five of Sunderland’s last seven.

The Black Cats have failed to score a league goal at home just once in 2024 and so could grab a goal against a Foxes backline that has kept just one clean sheet on the road in their last five league outings.

And this might be as good as it gets for the two promotion hopefuls, with their recent dip in form unlikely to assist either side in grabbing the victory.
