Everton ended their winless run of seven games with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Ham at Goodison Park.

After a drab first half, Neal Maupay scored the game's only goal eight minutes after the break.

He received the ball on the edge of the box before firing a quick shot on the bounce past a helpless Lukasz Fabianski and into the bottom left corner.

West Ham threatened more often after the opener in a contest that became open and end to end, with Said Benrahma's curling effort striking the post and Maxwel Cornet denied by Asmir Begovic late on.

A lack of quality in the final third and a troubling reliance on set pieces proved the downfall of David Moyes' side again as the Hammers slipped into the bottom three.

Everton boss Frank Lampard praised Maupay’s impact after the game.

He said: "We brought him in for that reason. He’s a proven Premier League scorer.

"We played some games early in the season with false nines, trying to find solutions.

"There were times in games with that bit of clinical finishing, we would have got more points. How close he kept that first touch and how quickly he shot is why he scored.

"You can see we’ve added a lot in the dressing room. We have to be hard to beat."

Moyes, meanwhile, bemoaned the performances of some of his more established players.

He said: "We had a game on Thursday night and we are still trying to put new players in and find out a lot about them — we found out little bits.

"But it was mainly about the players I know about in the main who let me down at different times with poor play overall.

"The players who played last year are down on their level as well as us introducing new players. We have shown signs we were getting back to it but I don't think we did today.

"We couldn't put two or three passes together and when we got anything in the final third it was nearly always the wrong decision. The last 20 minutes, we had some chances to get an equaliser."
