Mauricio Pochettino labelled Chelsea's 4-1 drubbing at Newcastle as their "worst game of the season".

The Blues, who finished the game with 10 men following Reece James' straight red card, suffered a heavy defeat on Tyneside to extinguish their momentum that had been building prior to the international break.

Raheem Sterling's free-kick cancelled out Alexander Isak's opener at St James' Park before Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon scored in a rampant second half for the Magpies.

Giving an honest assessment of his team's display, Pochettino, 51, said: "It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands.

"We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning.

"We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy.

"Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle. That is why I am so upset with the performance.

"It is a young team, they need this type of situation to realise. We will go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off.

"We cannot blame the players, it is the team together. We need to understand the level we need to compete and learn about this situation.

"There are many details, many things that build confidence and strength. We already know what is going on, and we will try to change the dynamic."

The forward's 83rd-minute finish, which also opened his top-flight account, earned a precious 2-1 win over Crystal Palace that lifts the Hatters out of the relegation zone.

Brown, 25, told Premier League Productions: "It's a mad feeling to get my first goal and the main thing was getting that three points. It's such a good feeling and we've earned it.

"There's been a few times where we've scored and conceded after. We knew we had to give it our all to hold on at the end and the feeling in the dressing room is going to be top now.

"As the season has gone on we've got better and better. We're all working hard each week and you could see the support from the fans in the last 12 minutes. That helped massively."

Moor misery for Burnley

Burnley are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season

VIncent Kompany said Burnley's dramatic late defeat to West Ham was the toughest to take yet this season.

The Clarets were heading for a much-needed win through Jay Rodriquez's penalty but the Hammers snatched the victory with goals in the 86th and 91st minute.

Asked if it was the most painful of their 11 defeats this term, Kompany said: "You can say that.

"It’s what makes this game beautiful but also what makes this game hard. There's no other way to say it.

"Today was a tough one to take but I've mentioned it before, it's still a universal recipe, you’ve got to get back up and keep going."

The Irish striker was on target to help the Seagulls end a six-game winless run in the Premier League, with Joao Pedro's brace enough to seal the victory at the City Ground despite Lewis Dunk's red card.

Ferguson told the BBC: "It was a mad old game! It was worth it for the three points.

"We've dropped points in those moments [after Lewis Dunk's red card] and today we came together as a team to push over the line.

"Every game there's an opportunity to impress and that is what I hope to do when I come in."
