Premier League leaders Liverpool will be aiming to further underline their title credentials when they travel to St James' Park to face Newcastle on Wednesday.

The Reds will head into the midweek action sitting nine points clear at the top of the standings and 11 ahead of defending champions Manchester City following their 2-0 victory over the Citizens on Sunday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, remain inconsistent and have slipped into the bottom half of the standings after conceding a 94th-minute equaliser against Crystal Palace last time out.

Team news

Newcastle are sweating over the fitness of key forward Alexander Isak, who is a major doubt for Wednesday's game after being forced off with a hip issue against Palace.

Callum Wilson is the likely man to replace Isak in the starting XI, while the Magpies will continue to make do without defensive trio Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Emil Krafth, who are all expected to be sidelined until the New Year.

Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns but are expected to remain without goalkeeper Alisson Becker, defensive trio Kostas Tsimikas, Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley and forwards Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa.

The stats

Consistency has been an issue for Eddie Howe's Newcastle

Newcastle have lost six matches in a row against Liverpool and have failed to win any of their last 15 meetings with the Reds since a Martin Skrtel own goal and a strike from future Anfield player Georginio Wijnaldum helped them to a 2-0 win in December 2015.

Publicidad

The Magpies had won three matches in a row in all competitions before November's international break, but they have since lost on home soil to West Ham and drawn at Crystal Palace.

The 2-0 defeat to the Hammers was the second time in three home matches in the league where Eddie Howe's side had failed to score.

Liverpool have won 18 and lost only one of their 20 matches under Arne Slot and they head to Tyneside having triumphed in seven matches on the spin in all competitions.

The Reds are also unbeaten in their nine away games with the Dutchman in charge, with their sole defeat of the campaign to date coming at home to Nottingham Forest in September.

Liverpool have scored at least two goals in eight matches on the spin in all competitions, during which time they have faced the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Prediction

Liverpool's relentless form under Slot has arguably reached new heights over the last week following their eye-catching victories over both Real Madrid and Manchester City.

A ninth away win in 10 games this season should be on the cards for the Reds on Wednesday and it would be no surprise to see them score at least three goals.

The last time these two sides faced off Liverpool claimed a 4-2 victory on New Year's Day, extending their winning run against Newcastle to six matches.

While the Magpies have largely been solid defensively this season — conceding just 14 league goals — they did ship three at Fulham earlier in the campaign and are unlikely to have come up against an attack as potent as Liverpool's.
