Earps and Broad among contenders for Sports Personality award

Mary Earps and Stuart Broad are among the six stars battling to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year,

The 2023 edition will see the Beeb celebrate 70 years of the iconic awards show, which recognises the biggest and most popular names in the world of sport. 

Earps, who has earned a loyal following with her impressive displays for the Lionesses and Women's Super League title contenders Manchester United, is heavily tipped to scoop the top prize in Salford on December 19. 

But the 30-year-old keeper faces stiff competition from cricket legend Broad, 37, athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and 52-year-old jockey Frankie Dettori. 

Also vying for the prize, which will be decided via a public vote, are wheelchair tennis star Alfie Hewett and golfer Rory McIlroy, 

Presented by Clare Balding, Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott, the star-studded event will look back on an action-packed year of sport.

England and Arsenal ace Beth Mead took home the coveted title last year after starring as the Lionesses won Euro 2022, with England Test cricket captain Ben Stokes in second and GB curler Eve Muirhead finishing third.

Votes can be cast by phone or online on the evening of December 19 and the number to call for each contender will be revealed during the programme.
