Martha Thomas is enjoying a sensational start to life at Tottenham.

The striker, signed from Manchester United in the summer, has scored in each of her first three Spurs games against Chelsea, Bristol City and Reading.

Ahead of today's trip to Brighton, we take a look at Thomas' impressive goalscoring form.

On the periphery

Thomas was unable to establish herself as a regular at Man Utd, making just one start in the Women's Super League last season.

The 27-year-old made a further 19 league appearances as a substitute but only scored once, with Leah Galton, Alessia Russo and Lucia Garcia ahead in the pecking order.

Nonetheless, Thomas had shown enough in 2021-22 to prove herself a capable WSL forward, netting five goals in 18 matches.

Her previous success with West Ham would also have reassured Tottenham, having struck eight times across two top-flight campaigns with the Irons.

Competition for England

Ahead of this weekend, no WSL player had registered more shots on target than Thomas (five) after two games.

And the Scotland international has certainly been presented with plenty of opportunities early in her Spurs career, registering 10 shots in total.

Comparisons have inevitably been made between Thomas and Bethany England, who has been sidelined after hip surgery.

But the two strikers offer different qualities — and manager Robert Vilahamn has insisted that both players could fit into his starting XI.

He said: "I have a plan for how I can use both.

"I play a 4-2-3-1 but in that I have the possibility to move players and use the best skills they have.

"In my head, I have a plan with how we can use both so it will not be an issue."

Pressing prowess

Vilahamm also praised Thomas' tactical intelligence after Tottenham's win over Bristol City.

He said: "She [Thomas] is very important with how we want to press because she understands the way I want to press.

"She actually got a goal from it today as well.

"She's doing that work for the team and then she'll end up in those situations where she'll score goals.

"In the next step, she'll be even stronger finishing as well. If she gets up one more level, she'll score a lot of goals."

Attacking quality

After such a bright start, Spurs will hope Thomas is the key to an improvement on last season.

The North Londoners finished ninth in the WSL in 2022-23, scoring just 31 goals in 22 games and accumulating a measly 18 points.

Additional quality in attack to help out England, who scored 12 WSL goals after joining in January, can only be a positive.

With Brighton up next, Thomas will be aiming to keep her goalscoring run going and make it four in four for Tottenham.
