- Erik ten Hag's side finished third last season
- Champions League football returns to Old Trafford
- Recommended bet: Manchester United to win a trophy

Manchester United will expect to compete on all fronts in 2023-24 under Erik ten Hag following the summer arrivals of goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Mason Mount.

Last season

United finished third in the Premier League last season and ended a six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup.

Erik ten Hag's side are back in the Champions League this term after ending the Premier League campaign nine points behind runners-up Arsenal and 14 adrift of local rivals and title winners Manchester City.

United disappointingly exited the 2022-23 Europa League at the quarter-final stage, losing 5-2 on aggregate to Sevilla, while they were unable to stop City winning one leg of their famous treble as Pep Guardiola's side triumphed 2-1 in the first-ever all-Manchester FA Cup final at Wembley.

The manager

Ten Hag has been praised for the work he has done at Old Trafford and his first full season in charge ended with silverware and a return to the top four, both of which would have been acceptable targets last summer.

The 53-year-old Dutchman, who led former club Ajax to three Eredivisie titles, is credited with getting United back on track following a poor spell under interim boss Ralf Rangnick and he is one of the most respected coaches in European football.

Results have steadily improved under Ten Hag, who has an impressive record since taking over at the Theatre of Dreams, winning 41 of his 62 games in charge.

Transfers

The capture of Mount from Chelsea for an initial £55million looks like good business and the England international, who scored 33 goals in 195 appearances for the Blues, should give United more creativity and dynamism in the final third.

Onana has been brought in from Inter Milan for around £47m and is viewed as an upgrade on previous No.1 David de Gea, who left earlier this summer when his contract expired after 12 years at the club.

Strengths and weaknesses

Marcus Rashford is again expected to be a key source of goals for Manchester United

Marcus Rashford hit 30 goals in all competitions last season and the England forward will once again be crucial to United's hopes of success as he spearheads the attack.

Bruno Fernandes, who has been named skipper this summer after Ten Hag ruthlessly opted to strip Harry Maguire of the armband, is another key player, with the Portugal international managing 14 goals and 15 assists overall last term.

Christian Eriksen is an experienced Premier League performer and, despite some injury troubles, the Dane is seen as vital in making United tick in the middle of the park.

Casemiro was also a stand-out performer in midfield last season following his move from Real Madrid, scoring seven times in total, including in the Carabao Cup final success over Newcastle.

De Gea was increasingly seen as a liability at the back following several high-profile errors but that weakness looks to have been addressed with the signing of Onana.

There remain doubts over the defence overall, though, with Maguire another who looked short of confidence when he did feature, while Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez both had their fair share of injury problems last season.

Previous high-profile signings such as Antony and Jadon Sancho have been inconsistent and have not yet hit the heights expected of them but remain players with vast potential.

Best outright bet

After Ten Hag helped secure the League Cup last season, sights will be set on landing more silverware in the new campaign and United are 9/1 to top the standings, while the Red Devils are available at 66/1 to win an FA and League Cup double and are 16/1 for Champions League glory.

Publicidad

Stopping Manchester City domestically is likely to be a difficult task again, but with four pieces of silverware to target, United can be backed at a tempting 7/4 to win a trophy.
