Talking Tactics: Hats off to Edwards as Luton boost survival hopes

Luton were written off by most before a ball was kicked in the Premier League this season.
But with roughly a third of the campaign played, the Hatters currently find themselves four points clear of the relegation zone after beating Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The 2-1 win — courtesy of goals from Teden Mengi and Jacob Brown — was their first Premier League victory at Kenilworth Road and they will head to Brentford this Saturday in high spirits.
We turn the spotlight on Luton's hopes of beating the odds and surviving.
A fighting chance
Promoted sides Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United had won only three of their combined first 36 games, leading most to tip all three for a drop back down to the Championship.
But despite seemingly being the biggest underdogs of that trio, the Bedfordshire outfit look to be the ones with the best chance of survival as we approach December.
Both Burnley and the Blades already have some heavy defeats to their name so far but a Premier League rival has yet to put Luton to the sword in the same way.
Edwards' disciplined side have not lost by more than two goals since Matchday 2, while five of their eight defeats have been by just one goal.
Getting better
They are slowly getting on the right side of those narrow results too, as they acclimatise more to the English top flight.
A stoppage-time equaliser prevented them from beating Liverpool in their last home game before a narrow 1-0 loss at Manchester United.
They finally went one better against Palace despite riding their luck at times, doubling their tally of wins for the campaign after September's victory at Everton.
Edwards will hope Kenilworth Road can start to become the fortress it was in the Championship last season, while Everton's 10-point deduction will have galvanised that belief further.
Stick to the plan
Luton have not strayed from their direct and physical approach — and it is proving to be effective against some of the league's big hitters.
After failing to get the better of the Hatters earlier this month, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was left in no doubt that any team travelling to Kenilworth Road this season will have their work cut out.
He said: "Nobody won here with a crazy result and I knew before why but now I felt it — they do really well."
After a tricky start to the campaign, Edwards has clearly kept that belief in their approach among the squad and it now looks to be paying dividends.
No cause for a party
After trying and failing on five previous attempts, Edwards would have been forgiven for celebrating Luton's first home victory of the campaign.
But the former Forest Green and Watford boss remained focused on the task ahead, saying: "I don't want the players having a party. We've done nothing.
"We've got nine points. I don't think that's anything to be going out to the nightclub and having a disco or a party.
"Enjoy it but we've got to go again. Brentford's really difficult next week, then we've got Arsenal and Manchester City to look forward to. We've got to keep improving and getting better.
"So enjoy the moment, enjoy the feeling, it's nice. The players can enjoy their weekend. But it's back to work quickly."
