Beauport looking to build on Sandown success
Publicidad

Jumps racing returns to Sandown Park for a new season on Sunday as they celebrate Countryside Day at the Esher venue.

It's a seven-race card at Sandown between 12.30pm and 3.45pm with conditions set to be 'Good to soft-good in places' on the chase track and 'Soft-good to soft in places' on the hurdles track.

We've selected six horses to follow on the first day of the National Hunt season at one of Britain's iconic venues.

LiveScore Five to Follow at Sandown Park on Sunday

12.30pm — Hampton Court Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle (2m4f)

Mr One More took out a four-runner Fontwell contest for Harry Fry five weeks ago and will have his chance if turning up here in a similar mood but the returning BEAUPORT could positon a spanner in the works for Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jordan Nailor.

Publicidad

He made good progress in four hurdles starts last term, culminating in a wide-margin success over C&D (soft) in the 'National Hunt' Novices' Handicap Hurdle Final in March. He is higher in the ratings but has plenty of room for better.

LiveScore Selection: Beauport

1pm — Guildford Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (2m4f)

O'Connell Street was an easy winner at Perth on penultimate start and while held since in Ireland, he did not have much go right that day in meeting interference and then making an error at a crucial stage.

He is a player as is Minella Trump - seeking to win for the fifth time in as many starts since August. Donald McCain's charge is thriving and his mark is the same as when scoring three weeks ago at Sedgefield.

FIFTY BALL was most promising for Gary Moore after arriving from France last season, winning twice and finishing second in the Betfair Hurdle.

Publicidad

He has the potential to go further as a chaser and with the stable in such a rich vein of form, a fast start could be incoming.

LiveScore Selection: Fifty Ball

1.35pm — Esher Maiden Hurdle (2m)

Blairgowrie is an interesting newcomer to the hurdles game for Nicky Henderson but was twice turned over at short odds in bumpers last season and could be running into something useful here in HE'S A KNOWALL for Paul Webber and Brian Hughes.

The Oscar gelding easily won an Irish point-to-point (Flat) in one run last year and is likely to have been well prepared for this rules/jumping bow.

LiveScore Selection: He's A Knowall

2.10pm — John O'Leary Memorial Future Stars Intermediate Chase (Listed, 3m)

Chantry House is looking for a fourth successive win

It has got to rank as a disappointment that only two runners have turned up for the Future Stars Chase but, mercifully, they are two that at least fit the bill in CHANTRY HOUSE and The Big Breakaway and a good match should ensue.

An early departure from Envoi Allen at Cheltenham would have seen some quibble his Marsh Novices' Chase win but Chantry House impressed no less and he followed up at Aintree in the Mildmay, though again benefitting from the late departure of Espoir De Romay.

He had Shan Blue and Fiddlerontheroof on toast there however and both have done the form no harm this season.

A good third behind Monkfish at Cheltenham over this distance, The Big Breakaway was pulled up behind Chantry House on Merseyside and fell when beaten on his comeback last month at Newton Abbot over 2m5f.

Publicidad

It leaves him a long way from the huge promise of last season's chasing debut romp around Cheltenham.

LiveScore Selection: Chantry House

2.45pm — Kingston Handicap Hurdle (2m)

On To Victory got his act together over hurdles last season after a Kempton fall on Boxing Day, winning twice and running well in third in a valuable end-of-season contest over this C&D.

He is fit from the Flat and a leading player but with the Gary Moore team doing so well, HUDSON DE GRUGY might take some halting.

He progressed in four hurdles starts last term after arriving from France - winning over C&D (heavy) in December and easily following up on handicap bow in March from 8lb lower than this.

He was not beaten far on final start at Newbury (2m3f, good to soft) and the 4YO should make further progress this winter.

LiveScore Selection: Hudson De Grugy

3.45pm — Teddington Open NH Flat Race (2m)

Gordon Elliott-trained runners at Sandown are few and far between and so it is interesting to see LIEUTENANT HIGHWAY making the journey here for what is a relatively mundane Bumper contest, despite the fact so many of the leading UK yards are represented.

A dawdling pace did not help the son of Fame And Glory when he only managed third of four at Punchestown last month but he was a warm order to win there and, in the colours of Elliott's Travelling Head Camilla Sharples, some compensation may await here.

LiveScore Selection: Lieutenant Highway
