City unveil Aguero statue

Manchester City have commemorated the 10th anniversary of Sergio Aguero's title-winning goal against QPR by unveiling a statue of the Argentine.

Aguero's strike in the fourth minute of stoppage time in City's final Premier League game of the 2011-12 campaign has gone down in English football folklore.

And the 33-year-old goal machine, who retired in December due to a heart condition after a short spell with Barcelona, is delighted with the sculpture.

He said: "Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me. In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

"I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.

"I remember I was very young, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving."

Recalling his goal against the R's, he added: "For me that moment changed my life, changed the club and everything.

"It was the best moment of my life. That moment will always be in my heart."

After joining from Atletico Madrid in July 2011, Aguero went on to score 260 goals for City before departing for the Camp Nou a decade later.

Conte could transform Spurs

Martin Keown is worried Antonio Conte could transform Tottenham if he is given the right backing.

Conte has bemoaned the lack of strength in depth at his disposal since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last November.

But that did not stop Spurs hammering 10-man Arsenal 3-0 last night to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

And former Gunners defender Keown, 55, fears they will continue to improve as Conte pushes to reinforce his squad.

He said: "Conte is the best thing to happen to Spurs in years. The fear is, if he’s given two or three transfer windows, he’ll do well."

Frankly speaking

Frank Lampard has urged his players to keep on pushing as Everton bid to stay up

Frank Lampard will not let Everton take their foot off the gas as they push to preserve their Premier League status.

The Toffees host Brentford on Sunday having picked up seven points from their last three games.

And Lampard, 43, insists there is plenty of hard work still to come between now and the end of the season.

He said: "The next game is absolutely crucial. We’re not done, we’re not over the line — the minute you switch off, this game can be finished.

"It's our job to get across the line. It's up to us to make that happen."

Down but not out

The Canaries head to Wolves on Sunday knowing they will be playing in the Championship next season.

But Smith, 51, wants them to go out with a bang. He said: "We don't want to finish the season with doom and gloom.

"I want the players to go and enjoy themselves and play with a bit of freedom.

"We have had some big moments in games that we haven't taken. That is frustrating because we all know goals change games."

Phil your boots

Steven Gerrard is delighted Aston Villa have managed to secure Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal.

The Brazilian playmaker, 29, joined Villa on loan from Barcelona in January but has now signed a four-year contract after impressing his former Liverpool team-mate.

Speaking ahead of side's clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday, Villans boss Gerrard said: "We’re very pleased with that news. It’s fantastic for everyone connected to the club.

"To have him here and settled, I think he’ll go up another level.

"He is a player that needs to feel wanted and feel support — and everyone at Villa has played their part.

"It’s fantastic he wants to be part of this journey. Phil is very humble, he is extremely professional and he sets standards on a daily basis."
