Sunderland Keane on Roy

Roy Keane is being lined up for a sensational return to the Sunderland dugout. 

Manchester United legend Keane, 50, started his managerial career at the Stadium of Light in 2006.

He resigned in December 2008 and was appointed Ipswich boss in April 2009. 

After being sacked by the Tractor Boys in January 2011, the Irishman had spells as assistant manager with his country, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest before focusing on TV work. 

But the Black Cats are keen to lure him back to management after axing Lee Johnson following last weekend's 6-0 drubbing at Bolton. 

Heading into Saturday's visit from Doncaster, Sunderland are third in the League One table — five points adrift of leaders Rotherham. 

Auba opens up

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang admits a strained relationship with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta played a part in his decision to join Barcelona. 

The striker, 32, was released by the Gunners earlier this week having been stripped of the captaincy by Arteta following a disciplinary breach late last year. 

Barca picked him up as a free agent and Aubameyang is believed to have agreed a significant pay cut in order to seal a three-year deal. 

Speaking at his official unveiling today, he said: "I think it was a problem just with him [Arteta]. I can't really tell you much. He wasn't happy and that was it. 

"I can't say anything else because that's what happened. I wasn't very happy and I'm better this way.

"There were some complicated months. Sometimes football is like that. If I had to say something about this, I would say, on my behalf, I never wanted to do anything bad.

"Now I have to put this behind me, that is in the past. I want to think about the present."

Cole teams up with Lamps

Ashley Cole has joined Frank Lampard's backroom staff at Everton as first-team coach. 

The former left-back, who had been working for Chelsea's academy and England Under-21s, played alongside his new boss at Stamford Bridge for eight trophy-laden years.

Lampard, 43, said: "I’m delighted to add Ashley into my backroom team. Everyone knows about his superb playing career and what he has achieved in the game. 

"He is now a well-respected coach recognised by his work with England Under-21s. 

"He’ll bring a wealth of enthusiasm, game-play experience and is a very good young coach who adds strength to our coaching staff."

Cole, 41, added: "I was thrilled when Frank asked me to join him at Everton. 

"This is a brilliant opportunity with a fantastic club and I am coming here to work hard and try to help bring success to Everton.

"The chance to link up again with Frank was another huge draw. He is an excellent manager and leader. 

"With the rest of the staff here, we have everything in place for what we want to achieve together."

Cole joins assistant managers Joe Edwards and Duncan Ferguson, first-team coach Paul Clement, first-team coach and head of performance Chris Jones and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly in Everton's new-look set-up.

Talk of the Toon

Callum Wilson was glued to his TV on transfer deadline day as Newcastle continued to splash the cash. 

Wilson, 29, picked up a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at St James' Park in December — and boss Eddie Howe confirmed last month that he will be sidelined for eight weeks. 

But the former Bournemouth hitman cannot wait to return to play alongside the club's new recruits. 

He said: "Watching deadline day, I think it was the first time I was actually aware who was joining the club.

"I was looking forward to the club bringing in another striker as well as Chris Wood [who joined in mid-January]. I think we needed one more.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get that in the attacking area but I back Woody from now until the end of the season and also back myself.

"Bring the competition in the door because it is nice and it does push you. It does take you to that next level and I think it brings out the best in you."

Bruce in the Bag?

West Brom are close to appointing Steve Bruce as their new boss. 

Bruce, 61, is thought to be in pole position to replace Valerien Ismael, who was axed by the Championship club yesterday. 

The ex-Aston Villa, Hull, Sunderland and Birmingham manager has been out of work since leaving Newcastle last October.
