Formula 1 has a new look for 2022 with a revolution in the design of the cars following an overhaul of the rules.

It is hoped the makeover will increase competitiveness of motorsport’s showpiece event which has been dominated by Mercedes in recent years.

The season opens with the Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir on March 20 and a number of key changes will be in force.

Front and rear wings

The previous design sent airflow outwards, affecting the car following closely behind and hindering its ability to overtake. The new rear wing will reduce that interference and should lead to more close encounters.

18-inch tyres

A popular choice among race fans as they are aesthetically pleasing, but a marked change from the existing 13-inch wheels.

The new tyres are heavier and could slow cars down by over a second compared with previous seasons, but these bigger tyres will not interfere so much with the car’s aerodynamics.

With fewer aero constraints the teams’ designers have had an opportunity to completely revamp the cars.

Underfloor tunnels

It’s an air pressure thing. Without getting too technical, any vehicle travelling at speed close to the ground will generate forces.

By introducing two long underfloor air tunnels to the base of the cars, it will help produce what’s know as ‘ground effect’, in essence, providing more suction under the car to help it grip the track.

They are also designed to reduce the amount of ‘dirty air’ expelled behind the car, which previously affected competitors close behind.
