Cristiano Ronaldo scored an 89th-minute winner to help Portugal beat 10-man Iceland on his historic 200th international appearance in Tuesday's Euro 2024 qualifier.

The Selecao captain used great movement to find space at the back post and fire home substitute Goncalo Inacio's headed ball back across goal.

Although, he had to wait for a lengthy VAR review before being awarded his 123rd international goal, as Inacio was initially ruled offside in the build-up — a decision which was eventually overturned.

It marked a historic moment in Ronaldo's phenomenal career as he became the first man to reach 200 international appearances.

Pepe had come close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when he rose for a powerful header that was met with equal strength by Iceland goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson.

Chances in the second half were limited, with Sverrir Ingi Ingason doing just enough to stop an opportunity from falling to Ronaldo.

The visitors struggled to break down a resilient Iceland team that eventually fell to 10 men as Willum Willumsson received a second yellow card with 10 minutes remaining.

Nevertheless, Ronaldo found a way through to ensure Portugal maintained their perfect start to their qualifying campaign and keep two points clear of Slovakia at the top of Group J.

Ronaldo said post-game: "For me, it's an unbelievable achievement, it's amazing. And, of course to score the winning goal, it's even more special.

"We didn't play so well but sometimes football is like that but we scored a goal and, in my opinion, we deserved it. I'm so happy because of 200 caps, but this is even more special."
