Back Feyenoord to win

Feyenoord had a tough start to their Champions League bid as they went down 4-0 at home to German champions Bayer Leverkusen, but they have a chance to respond on Wednesday.

Hosts Girona came agonisingly close to snatching a point at Paris Saint-Germain but came unstuck with a late own goal.

Team news

Girona are expected to be without Oriol Romeu and Daley Blind after both were forced off early in the 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo at the weekend. They join Ricard Artero and Jastin Garcia on the sidelines.

Publicidad

Feyenoord are without key striker Santiago Gimenez for around three months due to the hip injury he sustained in last month's win over NAC. In his absence, Ayase Ueda will spearhead the Dutch club's attack.

Brian Priske's visitors will also be without Quilindschy Hartman, Calvin Stengs and Bart Niewkoop.

The stats

This is the first-ever meeting between these two teams.

Girona have scored just two goals across their last five games (D2, L3).

Both teams have scored in six of Feyenoord's eight games across all competitions this season.

Publicidad

Feyenoord are unbeaten in normal time on their travels in 2024, with their last road loss coming in this competition at Celtic on December 13, 2023.

Prediction

Michel's Girona have struggled to repeat last season's heroics

Feyenoord were crushed 4-0 by Bayer in their European opener but the scoreline perhaps did not reflect their performance on the night.

The Rotterdam outfit actually created more chances than Bayer and also saw a goal chalked off, while Die Werkself scored with all four of their shots on goal.

De club aan de Maas play an attacking brand of football and a positive approach could set them up for a victory over a Girona side that looks low on confidence and short of ideas in attack.

The Catalan outfit offered very little at PSG, having to rely on backs-to-the-wall defending for large periods, and they have struggled for goals domestically as well, with just one in their last three La Liga games.

Feyenoord have been strong travellers for some time and they have not lost a game in normal time this calendar year, with their last loss on the road coming at Celtic in this competition in mid-December.

The visitors have drawn four of their five away games this season, including a win on penalties over PSV in the Johan Cruyff Shield, so backing Feyenoord in the double chance market at 10/13 is one option.

However, it could pay to be bold and back the Dutch giants to claim maximum points given Girona's recent struggles in front of goal.
