Substitute George Lapslie rescued a point for Gillingham at home to Cheltenham in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Looking for a third win in succession, the Gills opened the scoring through Jayden Clarke in the 24th minute, but a long range free-kick from Luke Young made it 1-1 at the break.

Cheltenham then took the lead through George Miller’s sixth goal of the season on the hour mark only for Lapslie to level things up at the end of a slick move eight minutes later.

Gillingham’s first was the result of an error by goalkeeper Joe Day, who spilled a low shot from Elliott Nevitt after Ethan Coleman’s pass, allowing Clarke to fire home from close range.

Joel Collwill then scuffed wide after good work from Jordan Thomas on the right.

Young’s leveller was a perfectly placed shot in the 36th minute which curled into the top right corner from 25 yards, beyond the reach of Glenn Morris, who was celebrating his 41st birthday.

Cheltenham stunned the home crowd when Thomas fed Tom Bradbury on the left and his cross was headed in from five yards by Miller to make it 2-1.

But after a fine ball forward from Remeao Hutton, Nevitt was able to pull back for Lapslie to slam low past Day and Bradley Dack saw a shot rebound off the bar for the Gills deep into time added on.
