Dan the man

Dan Burn has signed a new contract with Newcastle, committing him to the club until 2025.

Burn, 31, has made 70 appearances since joining his boyhood club from Brighton in January 2022.

The Blythe-born defender helped the Magpies qualify for the Champions League last season and scored in their historic 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

Burn said: "It means everything to me to play for this club and to sign a new contract.

"I said when I signed that I didn't want this to be just a stop-gap signing to keep us up — I wanted to be here for a long time.

"So personally it feels even more of an achievement signing this one than it was actually signing here in the first place."

Manager Eddie Howe added: "Dan is a leader on and off the pitch, so we are delighted he has extended his stay with us.

"He is a key part of our squad and has played a huge role in our progress since his arrival."

Jude Bellingham has scored 10 goals in his first 10 Real Madrid games

Paul Scholes believes England have never seen a player as good as Jude Bellingham at his age.

The 20-year-old linked up with England this week off the back of a sensational first two months at Real Madrid after his £88million move over the summer.

Scholes told TNT Sports: "Considering Jude Bellingham's age and considering what he has achieved so far in his career, he is better than anything we have seen before.

"We [Manchester United] were very close to signing him but he chose to go to Borussia Dortmund, which seems to be the right decision.

"It was a brave decision by him, but he seems like such a driven guy. So professional, with so much talent."

The Greal deal

Jack Grealish could feature for England tonight against Australia

Jack Grealish says a major international trophy with England is next on his list of targets after winning the Treble with Manchester City last season.

Grealish, 28, played a pivotal role in City's trophy-laden 2022-23 campaign and could be key to Gareth Southgate's Three Lions as they look to go all the way at Euro 2024 next summer.

Ahead of tonight's friendly with Australia, the attacker said: "I don't mean this to sound weird but it is difficult in a way because you have such a high of winning the Treble and then you do think 'what would ever top that?'

"To do something at international level with this group of players would be unbelievable.

"We've come close on two occasions and I feel like we are just getting better and stronger.

"That [trophy with England] would be the next on the list, hopefully."

Noni Madueke scored twice as England Under-21s beat Serbia 9-1

Lee Carsley hailed England Under-21s' "cut-throat" display as they crushed Serbia 9-1.

The Young Lions ran riot at the City Ground to continue a perfect start to their European title defence despite going a goal down early on.

Jaden Philogene, Harvey Elliott and Noni Madueke all scored twice while Liam Delap, Jonathan Rowe and Luka Subotic's own goal ensured a dominant win which kept them top of their Euro 2025 qualifying group after two games.

Manager Carsley said: "You can't afford to waste too many chances and they were cut-throat in the second half. It was good to see because it helps with their confidence.

"Sometimes when you see the scoreline, if you hadn't been at the game, you'd think it was a walk in the park but it didn't feel like that, especially going a goal down.

"We spoke about it a few days ago, how will this squad react to a setback? To go a goal down when you are so in control, it's testament to the players, they responded the right way."

Evan Ferguson is back in the fold for Republic of Ireland

Shane Duffy hopes Evan Ferguson can become the Republic of Ireland's talisman for years to come.

The Brighton striker, still just 18, is already a key man for the Boys in Green, with his absence in the last international break for their crucial Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and the Netherlands a huge blow for boss Stephen Kenny.

After two defeats in those games, Ireland's hopes of reaching next summer's Euros are effectively over but centre-back Duffy believes the returning Ferguson's emergence on the international scene is cause for optimism.

Ahead of facing Greece tonight, the 31-year-old said: "For me, he's got everything, he's the full package. He's a strong boy, he's a top finisher, he's willing to work for the team and he's willing to learn.

"For an 18-year-old, there is so much pressure on him already, you think that's a good habit to have.

"We're all really excited for the future for him. Hopefully with a bit of luck, he's our talisman for years to come and gets the goals we all want. He's a really good boy, he has a really bright future."
