Matter of time

Erik ten Hag is adamant Manchester United will soon return to winning ways after their humbling 3-0 defeat to local rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

The latest setback leaves United eighth in the Premier League having lost five of their opening 10 matches — but their boss insists things will improve.

He said: "There is no point in feeling sorry for ourselves at this moment in time.

"While this has not been the start to the season that we had all hoped for, I am certain that we have the talent and attitude as a collective to move in the right direction.

"I believe that it is only a matter of time before we are showing our true selves. It will come, I am certain."

Gross situation

Lyon manager Fabio Grosso says the attack on his team bus in Marseille on Sunday "could have been a tragedy".

The Italian required 12 stitches after he was hit by a projectile on the way into the Stade Velodrome and the match was eventually postponed.

He posted on Instagram: "I hope with all my heart that it can be a lesson for our future.

"What happened on Sunday evening could have been a tragedy. It certainly was for the sport and for all those who love it."

Bad Fer the team

Bruno Fernandes is setting a bad example as Manchester United captain, according to ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright.

Substitute Antony was booked for kicking out at Jeremy Doku late on in the 3-0 defeat but Wright believes the Brazilian was following his skipper's example.

He said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show: "Bruno sometimes just goes off and they're not ready. It's not good for the team.

"Watching Antony come on and his contribution was to kick out at [Jeremy] Doku like that but the example of the captain is seeping in. That's the captain doing it."

The Bridge is bored

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has criticised the "terrible atmosphere" at Stamford Bridge as the Blues' problems stack up.

Mauricio Pochettino's men lost 2-0 at home to Brentford on Saturday — and Nevin fears things could get worse ahead of games against Tottenham and Manchester City.

He said: "From their current league position to the long injury list, there is so much negativity surrounding Chelsea.

"Add to that the lack of Champions League football for the foreseeable future — and the financial problems that this will bring.

"That is before you consider the frankly frightening run of upcoming matches in the Premier League. Don't even mention the terrible atmosphere at Stamford Bridge."

Ajax sanctioned

Ajax have been handed a fine of over £20,000 and a partial stadium ban after their home game with Feyenoord was suspended when fireworks were thrown on the pitch in September.

The match was halted in the 56th minute after continued disturbances and only resumed three days later behind closed doors.

As a result, the Dutch giants must shut the first tier of the south side of the Johan Cruyff Arena for the match against Vitesse on November 25.

The club are in a state of crisis, sitting bottom of the Eredivisie with five points from eight matches.

Computer says no

Irene Paredes was denied her 100th Spain cap on Tuesday by a computer error, according to head coach Montse Tome.

Local media reported the teamsheet from Spain's previous match, which Paredes missed, had accidentally been submitted, meaning she could not be selected.

Tome said: "There was some kind of computer problem.

"I was told about it at the hotel so I had to adapt to the situation. From there, we chose the 11 that you saw."

Spain beat Switzerland 7-1 in Zurich without the 32-year-old, who will expect to bring up her century against Italy next month.
