Mourinho's Roman Empire

Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini believes all the credit should go to Jose Mourinho after the Giallorossi booked a date with Sevilla in the Europa League final.

The Italian side drew 0-0 with Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday evening, surviving an onslaught from the home side at the BayArena to secure a 1-0 aggregate win.

Pellegrini praised his manager in the aftermath of the semi-final tie, claiming the Special One has created a "personality" for the team.

The Italian midfielder said: "He's different, he makes you realise the importance of the match. We came here and everyone knew what they had to do.

"We study, we organise ourselves, we watch videos. Especially in Europe, you can see what the coach brings us. 

"Mourinho is the creator of this personality of ours."

Cheap narrative

Aaron Ramsdale has called out those claiming that Arsenal have "bottled it" in the title race.

Manchester City can win the Premier League this weekend if they beat Chelsea on Sunday or Mikel Arteta's side lose to Nottingham Forest the previous day.

On whether the criticism affects the Gunners squad, Ramsdale said: "It does when it comes from certain people who don't necessarily have the knowledge or the experience. 

"I also think it's very hard to say that with a team [City] who have won it in five of the last six years, gone on an 11-game winning streak and will potentially win the treble.

"So we have to be realistic as well. This narrative of 'bottled it', I think it is an easy way out. It's just quick, cheap narrative from certain people who have not actually gone digging into stories of what we've achieved."

Leicester lows

Chris Sutton is backing Newcastle to bury Leicester's survival chances when the teams meet on Monday at St James' Park.

The Magpies go into the fixture on the back of a 4-1 win over Brighton on Thursday, which strengthened their grip on the Champions League places.

While the Foxes are the top scorers in the bottom half of the Premier League, Sutton believes Dean Smith's defence will be unable to contain the opposition.

He said: "Leicester have scored more goals than any other team in the bottom half of the table and more than Aston Villa, who are eighth, too.

"The Foxes have some excellent attacking players but their defence is just not good enough. Even the return of Jonny Evans, who is a real warrior, has not changed that.

"That's why I don't think they will be able to compete with Newcastle, who have got a top-four finish in their sights and could take a big step towards that here.

"This is the game which is going to bury Leicester. They will still have something to fight for when they play Newcastle but, defensively, I just can't see them keeping Eddie Howe's side out."

Unbelievable turnaround

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws believes nobody could have expected the team's incredible play-off comeback against Peterborough on Thursday.

The Owls lost the first leg of the semi-final 4-0 but then delivered a stunning 5-1 victory at Hillsborough to send the tie to penalties.

Defender Jack Hunt stepped up to score the winning spot-kick for Darren Moore's side and they will now play either Barnsley or Bolton in the final at Wembley.

On the memorable night in Sheffield, Laws said: "Football is a beautiful game, however, there are always traps that are in front of you that you can fall over. 

"We all have to have optimism in football because it's what you live for but you have to be honest and say those fans were not expecting what happened. 

"Yes, they were expecting a response but to recover from 4-0 down? Unbelievable."

West Ham legend

Former West Ham winger Matt Jarvis thinks Declan Rice is already a club legend as the skipper closes in on European glory.

The England international, 24, played the full 90 minutes in the Hammers' 1-0 victory at AZ Alkmaar, which booked their place in the Europa Conference League final alongside Fiorentina.

Jarvis said: "He's a West Ham legend. He's captain and he could lift this trophy and be remembered with the greats. 

"If someone comes in for him and pays a lot of money, then it's an incredible way to leave but at the same time you can see his passion and desire for his club. 

"Everyone obviously wants him to stay."

Rice has been heavily linked with a move away from the London Stadium this summer. 

Arsenal are thought to be the favourites to sign the midfielder, while Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the other clubs keeping tabs on him.

Brotherly love

Cody Gakpo has applauded compatriot Virgil van Dijk for helping him settle so quickly at Liverpool.

The Dutch forward, 24, joined the Reds from PSV in January and has scored six goals in 19 Premier League appearances.

Ahead of Liverpool's match against Aston Villa on Saturday, Gakpo said: "He's [Van Dijk] helping me, he's guiding me, I have to say. I don't think I said it even to him yet but I'm really grateful.

"He's like a big brother here to me. From the day I first arrived he's helped me with everything outside the pitch and inside the pitch. I'm really grateful for that. 

"Hopefully we can have some really good moments together."
