Midfield master

Erik ten Hag believes Marcel Sabitzer is the perfect choice to solve Manchester United's midfield injury woes.

The Austrian was signed on loan from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day after it was confirmed that Christian Eriksen had joined Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay on the casualty list.

And Ten Hag is confident the new addition will be right at home in the Premier League.

The United boss said: "We needed that transfer because we have a shortage of midfield players. It was good to bring a quality player like that in on deadline day.

"I know the player already. He has a great attitude and he is in the right age, so I am sure being here will motivate him strongly."

Sabitzer, 28, watched from the stands at Old Trafford last night as United beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 to progress to the Carabao Cup final 5-0 on aggregate.

High hopes

Enzo Fernandez could make his Chelsea debut against Fulham tomorrow night

Chelsea boss Graham Potter is ready to throw Enzo Fernandez straight into action against Fulham tomorrow night.

The Blues broke the British transfer record in the dying moments of the January transfer window by sealing a £106.8million deal to prise the World Cup-winning Argentinian from Benfica.

And Potter wants the 22-year-old midfielder in his line-up as quickly as possible as he looks to drag his side away from mid-table.

He said: "We're very pleased to have Enzo with us. We'll see whether he can be involved tomorrow, we've got to get through the paperwork and make sure he gets the relevant clearance and all of that stuff.

"I've spoken with him today. My Spanish isn't the best and his English isn't great, so we needed to lean on the translator but we'll get there.

"He is an impressive young man and we're looking forward to working with him."

Bring it on

Sean Dyche is relishing the challenge of leading Everton to safety

New Everton boss Sean Dyche insists he is comfortable going into a relegation battle without any new recruits.

The struggling Toffees failed to make a single signing during the January sales — but Dyche has made it clear it was not for a want of trying on the club's part.

Speaking ahead of his side's crunch game with Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday, he said: "Phone calls were made, offers were made.

"We can have debates but I'm not going to sign players for the sake of it. They've got to be good enough to affect what we do.

"There's good players here. They may not have shown it but we need to remind ourselves of the good players here. We've got to polish them up a bit."

Injury blow

Leeds forward Rodrigo is out for two months after picking up an ankle injury in last week’s FA Cup win at Accrington Stanley.

The 31-year-old Spain international, a second-half sub in the fourth-round tie, has reportedly undergone surgery to repair bone and ligament damage.

Varane quits Les Bleus

Raphael Varane has retired from international football following France's failure to retain the World Cup in Qatar.

The Manchester United centre-back, 29, was part of the side that won the tournament in 2018 but was unable to help Les Bleus defend the crown last year.

In a statement posted on social media, the 93-cap international said: "Representing our great country for a decade has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Each time I wore this special blue jersey, I felt immense pride.

"I will miss these moments but the time has come for the new generation to take over. We have a group of talented young players who are ready to take over, who deserve a chance and who need you [the fans]."

France boss Didier Deschamps added: "Raphael believes he has reached the end of his adventure with the France team.

"I experienced a situation somewhat similar to his. I understand his arguments and respect his decision."

Battle to be No1

Keylor Navas will challenge Dean Henderson to be Nottingham Forest's first-choice keeper

Steve Cooper will have a selection dilemma on his hands when Dean Henderson returns to fitness — but it is a problem the Nottingham Forest boss is relishing.

Henderson, 25, has impressed since moving to the City Ground on loan from Manchester United but is currently out of action with a thigh problem.

That injury prompted Forest to bring in Keylor Navas from Paris Saint-Germain until the end of the season before the transfer window slammed shut.

And Cooper is looking forward to seeing the Champions League winner, 36, working alongside Henderson in the battle to be No1.

He said: "Dean is not [out] long term. He is working very hard and when he is available we will see where he is at.

"But that is elite squad football. You need competition for places. I want that.

"It is a headache. There will always be a group of players for who I won't be their favourite person in the world. But I would rather have that."

After being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the Red Devils, Forest resume their Premier League campaign at home to Leeds on Sunday.

Stand up... if you want to

The Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle on February 26 will be the first major domestic English men's final in almost 35 years at which some fans will be allowed to stand.

Both clubs will receive an allocation of 867 seats within new standing areas at Wembley behind each goal in the East and West stands.

Premier League and Football League teams have been permitted to introduce licensed standing since the start of the season, with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Cardiff and QPR offering standing sections for home and away supporters.

In these areas, fans are allowed to stand for matches in allocated spaces behind a barrier or rail preventing them from falling forward.
