Cambridge finally picked up a first win of the season with a 2-0 success against Wigan.

Serving a one-game touchline ban, U’s boss Garry Monk watched on as they went ahead inside five minutes when Dan Nlundulu’s effort was diverted in by Elias Kachunga.

After 16 minutes Sam Tickle made a point-blank save to keep out Jubril Okedina’s header, but six minutes after that Cambridge went further ahead.

Korey Smith’s low effort from distance came back off the inside of the post, only to go in off the unfortunate Tickle.

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney and Monk’s assistant Barry Corr were both booked on the half hour for an exchange of views.

Kachunga could have had another before half time but fired straight at Tickle, before after 69 minutes Okedina was again denied his first career goal when he headed Kachunga’s cross onto the bar.

Wigan created few openings as they looked to get back into the game but did go close after 73 minutes when sub Thelo Aasgaard’s effort was deflected narrowly wide.
