Antoine Griezmann has again been excellent for Atletico Madrid this season and could play a leading role in their Champions League quarter-final second leg at Borussia Dortmund.

Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring before Griezmann assisted Samuel Lino for what proved to be the winner as his team raced into a 2-0 lead by 32 minutes. However, Sebastien Haller hit back to leave Dortmund trailing 2-1 ahead of their home leg.

Edin Terzic's side responded with a 2-1 win at Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, while Diego Simeone's team also triumphed, beating Girona 3-1 to improve their LaLiga top four hopes.

The hosts have a proud record at BVB Stadion but Griezmann's presence means that Atletico could take some stopping.

Team news

Dortmund were without Jadon Sancho against Gladbach due to illness but he is expected to return.

Haller is out after limping off in that game with a recurrence of the left ankle injury that has blighted his campaign.

Ramy Bensebaini is absent due to a knee problem but Julian Brandt could start after shining off the bench when introduced at half-time at the Metropolitano.

Atletico's Lino misses out through suspension, with Rodrigo Riquelme expected to play on the left after featuring there against Girona.

Mario Hermoso returned to the starting XI in Saturday's game and could continue as part of a three-man defence.

Memphis Depay is still unavailable due to a muscle problem and Thomas Lemar, Marcos Paulo and Vitolo are long-term absentees.

The stats

Dortmund have scored two or more goals in five of their six competitive home matches in 2024.

Publicidad

They are unbeaten at BVB Stadion in this season's Champions League, defeating both Newcastle and PSV Eindhoven 2-0 and drawing against AC Milan (0-0) and PSG (1-1).

They have conceded in four of their last five at home but are unbeaten in nine in Dortmund in this competition.

Atletico have won just one of their last eight away games in the Champions League but have an in-form forward in Griezemann.

The Frenchman has scored six times in this season's competition and provided his first European assist of the campaign via his sublime scooped pass for Lino in last week's first leg.

Prediction

Edin Terzic will need to come up with a way for Borussia Dortmund to stop Antoine Griezmann

Mats Hummels' and Nico Schlotterbeck's mix up for Lino's goal makes Dortmund vulnerable and after a frantic first leg, more of the same looks likely on Tuesday.

Griezmann made the most of that incident, latching on to a loose ball and dinking a delightful assist to the Brazilian, who finished smartly.

Dortmund's home record means they will rightly be confident but after a decade of being among the game's most consistent players, 'Griezou' looks to be playing with real freedom.

Atleti may sit deep and look to strike on the break and Griezmann can take advantage.

With the 33-year-old expected to be at the fore after scoring twice at the weekend, he could add to his already impressive tally in this season's Champions League.
