Austria to win

Austria sprang a surprise by topping Group D at the expense of France and the Netherlands but they will have to cope with the favourites tag when taking on Turkey in their round of 16 clash in Leipzig.

Ralf Rangnick’s side have played a bold high tempo style and it served them well in a tough group with a narrow 1-0 loss to France preceding superb victories over Poland (3-1) and the Netherlands (3-2).

The Austrians reached the round of 16 at Euro 2020 and are hoping to go at least one step further in Germany.

Turkey finished second in Group F with six points but their performances were mixed.

They achieved hard-fought victories over Georgia (3-1) and the Czech Republic (2-1) either side of a dismal 3-0 loss to Portugal where they were utterly outclassed.

Team news

Austria winger Patrick Wimmer serves a suspension and looks set to be replaced by either Konrad Laimer or Christoph Baumgartner.

Marko Arnautovic and Michael Gregoritsch are once again vying for the centre-forward berth.

Turkey head coach Vincenzo Montella will be forced into at least two changes with captain Hakan Calhanoglu and centre-back Samet Akaydin serving one-match bans.

Prediction

Austria stormed to the top of Group D with back-to-back victories and they look solid favourites to follow up by defeating Turkey in Leipzig.

Das Team have never reached the European Championship quarter-finals but they are playing with energy and confidence and might be capable of achieving something special this summer.

There has been a consistently fearless attitude from Rangnick’s side, who were slightly unfortunate to start off with a 1-0 loss to France.

The Austrians were not deterred by that setback and they are approaching the round of 16 full of confidence having scored six goals across their last two matches.

Publicidad

Turkey know they are going to be tested and they look suspect in defence having not kept a clean sheet in their last four matches.

Montella’s side were 2-1 winners against a Czech Republic side reduced to ten men after only 20 minutes, but they face a stiffer test against the Austrians and are unlikely to succeed.
