York go top after Marvin Armstrong’s goal secures win over Gateshead
Marvin Armstrong’s first-half goal sent York to the top of the National League as they edged out Gateshead 1-0.
Gateshead threatened first through Jovan Malcolm but it was York who took the lead in the 22nd minute when Ollie Pearce flicked on Dan Batty’s corner and Armstrong was on hand to turn it in.
They were close to a second in the 38th minute when David Ajiboye pulled the ball back for Armstrong but Owen Mason stuck out a leg to keep it out.
The first half ended with Gateshead’s Tyrelle Newton squandering a fine chance, getting into a good position only to hit a tame shot.
Dipo Akinyemi had chances to add to York’s lead after the break, missing the target when through on goal and then seeing another chance deflected wide after Gateshead gave the ball away, but the Minstermen had done enough to sit one point above Forest Green and Barnet.
