Daniel Podence's first-half goal saw Wolves pick up their first Premier League win of the season as they beat Southampton 1-0 at Molineux. 

Podence broke the deadlock for the hosts on the stroke of half-time, dinking delicately over the sliding Gavin Bazunu after Matheus Nunes had fizzed a low ball across the face of goal. 

Che Adams spurned a glorious opportunity to level the scores in the 62nd minute, inadvertently handling the ball over the line from close range when faced with an empty net. 

The Saints pushed in vain for another chance to equalise but Wolves held out for an important victory.

Saints head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl expressed frustration at Adams' inability to convert the chance he was presented with.

He said: "We had good chances to take something. That we don’t score today is normally not possible. Che [Adams] knows it. He’s frustrated because it must be a goal. 

"It’s 20 minutes to go and if we equalise, I would like to see what happens then. We created some good moments in the first half but should have scored [in the second]. 

"Wolves are waiting for these moments on the counter-attack. They have speed and quality up front. It is what it is."

Home boss Bruno Lage, meanwhile, insisted that his team need to build on their victory.

He said: "It’s important for us but the most important is what we are doing in each moment. 

"Players are arriving, we don’t have time to train and have to put them straight into the games. We try our best to have our best strategy and they’re performing well. 

"We scored one goal and after that we were very brave in the way we defended. We’re very happy. I told the players it’s one win, we have to build on it. We need to practice. The team that finished pre-season and the team we have now are so different. 

"I had a feeling when the fans started singing at the start about 'Bruno Lage ball'. I told the players we have to go outside and give everything. 

"The big attitude and the big energy comes from the fans. That’s why I was there at the end of the game to take all the support from them."
