Tottenham must avoid a third straight home defeat against Wolves if they are to keep their chances of a top-six finish alive this afternoon. 

A rollercoaster campaign in North London has already brought Europa League embarrassment, Jose Mourinho’s departure and Carabao Cup final heartbreak — but last week’s 3-1 loss at Leeds means even European qualification is far from assured. 

Strong finish needed

Various permutations remain for Spurs as the season enters its final days.

But all caretaker boss Ryan Mason can focus on is the performances of his own troops in their remaining three outings. 

Mason, 29, won his first two top-flight games in charge against Southampton and Sheffield United and did at least see Heung-Min Son continue his impressive form in front of goal during last weekend’s defeat in Yorkshire. 

South Korean international Son, 28, has scored in each of Mason’s three matches as boss and now has 17 Premier League goals this campaign — only four less than team-mate Harry Kane, the division’s top scorer.

But Wolves have become somewhat of a bogey team for Spurs on home soil, winning their last two visits 3-1 and 3-2 respectively.

However, the Londoners have an excellent record when hosting sides in the bottom half of the table. They are unbeaten in their last 19 such contests, with 15 wins and four draws. 

Tough campaign

Considering they have finished seventh in consecutive seasons, not many would have predicted Wolves suffering such a drop-off this term — but it has been a campaign plagued by injuries.

Regulars Jonny and Raul Jimenez have both been sidelined for several months, while red-hot winger Pedro Neto saw his campaign cut short with a knee injury a month ago. 

Despite those problems, Nuno Espirito Santo has eked out improvement from his troops in recent weeks to rack up 10 points from their last five league matches and secure a spot in mid-table. 

Last week’s comeback victory against Brighton was a classic Wolves performance in many ways — only Manchester United (54) have earned more points from behind in games than the men from Molineux (51) since the start of 2018-19. 

Spurs will need to keep a close eye on the unpredictable Adama Traore, who is finishing the campaign with a flourish. 

The electric wideman has scored twice and assisted twice in his last six Premier League appearances.

But he tends to be a slow burner — all seven of his top-flight goals in England have come in the second half of matches.
