Liverpool to win and both teams to score

Tottenham beat Manchester United 4-3 on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup but almost squandered a 3-0 lead and Sunday's visitors Liverpool can make them pay should they show the same sloppiness.

The Reds rotated in their 2-1 Carabao Cup win at Southampton and this pair will meet again over two legs in the semi-finals of that competition in January.

However, there is plenty of football to be played before that and Liverpool know a victory on Sunday will see them sit top at Christmas, having played a game fewer than their rivals.

Tottenham won last season's fixture 2-1 amid much VAR controversy but the Reds are unbeaten away from home in 2024-25 and look set record another victory.

Team news

Tottenham have huge injury issues, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and first-choice central defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven sidelined, while Ben Davies is also out.

Destiny Udogie could return after being rested in the week following the knock he received in last Sunday's 5-0 win over Southampton, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended.

Mohamed Salah, Ryan Gravenberch, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson were all left out at Southampton and should return, while Andy Robertson is available after serving his ban for the red card he received against Fulham.

Federico Chiesa will also be hoping for more minutes after returning at St Mary's but Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate remain out.

The stats

Tottenham have conceded the first goal in five of their eight Premier League home games this season.

Liverpool have let in 10 goals in their last seven Premier League games and could be vulnerable to an early goal, with Spurs scoring more times (nine) in the opening 15 minutes than any other team in the division.

However, Tottenham have kept just one clean sheet in their last 23 Premier League home games and are winless in their last three in the league at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Liverpool have also lost just two of the last 23 Premier League meetings with Spurs and have scored at least once in the last 17 meetings.

Prediction

Ange Postecoglou could suffer more frustration on Sunday
Ange Postecoglou could suffer more frustration on Sunday

Tottenham almost blew it against Manchester United but Ange Postecoglou managed to guide his team through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

However, doubts about his all-out attacking approach remain and Slot will set up to absorb pressure and then expose gaps on the break.

The Reds might be unbeaten on the road but their last three away league matches have ended in two draws and a victory and included 15 goals.

Something similar feels likely on Sunday, but with over 3.5 goals only available at 4/6, it might be worth being more punchy and looking at the match markets.

The visitors are the favourites but their recent defensive issues are a worry. Still, Tottenham are tough to trust, especially with so many injuries and Fraser Forster still keeping goal, but ever so exciting and could suffer their eighth league defeat of the season in a thriller.
