Erik ten Hag dedicated Manchester United's 2-1 victory at Sheffield United to club legend Sir Bobby Charlton following his death earlier in the day.

With United mourning the passing of 86-year-old Charlton, Scott McTominay opened the scoring after 28 minutes.

But the midfielder was punished just six minutes later for handling the ball inside the box, which allowed Oli McBurnie to level from the penalty spot.

However, Diogo Dalot's stunning second-half strike secured all three points for the visitors — and Ten Hag was quick to pay tribute to World Cup winner Charlton at full-time.

He said: "Our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife, his children and grandchildren.

"What he achieved in football was immense. Also his personality off the pitch. The football world lost a big man.

"We had to show our respect for him and I think we did that. We wanted to celebrate but also to remember him."

Back-to-back victories have helped steady the ship after United endured a poor start to the season.

And Ten Hag was happy with how his side adjusted to the tactics employed by Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom.

The Dutch boss said: "We are happy with the win. Find a way to win — that was the approach to this game.

"The first half was not the best from our side but from the second half we controlled the game and won with a great goal.

"Sheffield United had a lot of energy and played with a system we didn't expect. We adjusted."
