Netherlands are expected to battle past Romania in Munich to seal a place in the last eight of Euro 2024.

The Dutch have somewhat stumbled into the last 16 thanks to a narrow win over Poland and a creditable draw against France before they were beaten by Austria in the group stage.

Ronald Koeman's side will have to improve if they want to reach the latter stages of the tournament and they are set to be tested by a Romania outfit that also picked up one win and a draw as they qualified as shock Group E winners.

Team news

Romania left-back Nicusor Bancu is suspended so either Deian Sorescu or Vasile Mogos will start in his place.

Razvan Marin has not trained fully in the build-up to the tie but is expected to be fine to start.

Koeman should have a full squad to choose from but Joey Veerman, who came off in the first half against Austria, is set to drop to the bench with Xavi Simons recalled.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee was struggling with illness over the weekend but should have recovered in time for Tuesday's clash.

The stats

Netherlands had 39 attempts at goal in their three group games, seven more than Romania managed.

However, Romania racked up 14 attempts on target, four more than the Dutch.

Romania's 3-0 group win over Ukraine is their only victory in their last seven games.

Netherlands have won four of their last seven matches.

The two countries have met 13 times previously, with Netherlands winning on nine occasions. There have been three draws between the two sides and Romania have won just once - a 1-0 victory in a European Championship qualifier in October 2007.

Prediction

Netherlands began the tournament in promising fashion, coming from behind to beat Poland in their first game thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst.

The 0-0 draw with France that followed was also viewed as a good result and the Dutch were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a controversial VAR decision to disallow Simons' goal in that game, which probably would have secured a statement victory.

A 3-2 defeat to Austria in the final group game was disappointing, but they have shown enough in Germany so far to suggest they can edge out Romania with Gakpo, who has scored twice, and Memphis Depay, who got off the mark in the final group game, looking dangerous up front.

After a superb 3-0 win over Ukraine, Romania were brought back down to earth by a 2-0 loss to Belgium.

They ended the group with a 1-1 draw against Slovakia, finishing top due to their superior scoring record with all four teams locked on four points.

They look capable of containing the Dutch to begin with but Koeman's side should have enough knowhow and quality to get the job done after the break.
