LiveScore Racing Preview: Newbury, August 24, 2021
It is a busy Tuesday of racing with seven meetings taking place across the UK and Ireland.
Newbury is one of those racecourses hosting action, with six races taking place from 4.40pm-7.15pm.
Here are five horses to follow across the twilight meeting.
4.40pm - BetVictor Maiden Fillies' Stakes (6f)
After making a very encouraging debut at Newmarket earlier this month, SENSE OF DUTY will be expected to go one place better here and break her maiden at the second attempt. William Haggas' runner finished second of five on that opening run and was only denied by a head.
She did not quite get a clear run in the closing stages of that race. That outing is the best any of these runners have produced so far so she is understandably the one to beat.
LiveScore Selection: Sense Of Duty
5.15pm - BetVictor Handicap (7f)
A return to turf will be appreciated by NINE TALES.
He is unbeaten in two starts on this surface. He was unable to complete a hat-trick of wins last time at Chelmsford (6f) on the AW.
The son of Kingman can bounce back from his latest outing on what will be a second shot at this handicap mark of 82.
He remains open to improvement and he should be good enough to prevail in this field.
LiveScore Selection: Nine Tales
5.45pm - BetVictor Proud Sponsors Of Newbury Handicap (1m)
POWER OF DARKNESS prevailed for the first time this season on his last start at Newmarket over this distance of 1m.
He was given a patient ride by Dougie Costello who timed his run to perfection to get up late on.
The handicapper has reacted to that success by giving him a 5lb rise in the ratings. That seems very fair.
Marcus Tregoning's gelding has won off a 1lb lower mark than this, so he is in with a great chance again.
LiveScore Selection: Power Of Darkness
6.45pm Visit Newbury Handicap (1m4f)
There has been an improvement in each of MUSHRIF's four appearances on the track.
He produced his best effort so far earlier this month when he stepped up to the 1m4f, finishing second of six, going down by just a head.
Roger Varian's colt is up just 1lb in the ratings so another bold performance can be expected here.
If he can step up again on what he has shown so far, an opening win should come his way.
LiveScore Selection: Mushrif
7.15pm - Always Bet Responsibly At BetVictor Handicap (1m2f)
Beowulf has been successful on his last two appearances and is looking to complete a hat-trick in the finale on this card.
He may just find this a step too far as he is now 16lb higher in the ratings since his opening victory.
JUST JACOB can take advantage of the help he has been given by the handicapper.
He has not fared too badly on his two handicap appearances to date.
He is now 2lb lower than his latest effort at York (1m2f) and that will help his chances.
LiveScore Selection: Just Jacob
