The first Saturday of the new Premier League season sees six matches taking place, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa all in action.

Here are our expert writers’ top selections from each of the day's top-flight games.

Ipswich vs Liverpool (12.30pm)

This will be Ipswich's first Premier League match in 22 years and the fans are expected to generate a tricky atmosphere for the visitors.

Ipswich have kept together the same core of players that got them promoted last term, retaining star loanee Omari Hutchinson on a permanent basis.

And that means they should be able to hit the ground running.

Arsenal vs Wolves (3pm)

The odds on an opening win for the Gunners are short, but there looks a strong chance there will be plenty of goals in this clash after Mikel Arteta’s side posted 48 in 19 league games on their own patch last term.

Wolves had their issues defending on the road last season and kept their opponents below two goals in just four of their closing 14 games on their travels.

Everton vs Brighton (3pm)

Brighton have hit the ground running under Fabian Hurzeler, winning all four of their pre-season friendlies, scoring 14 goals in the process.

On another day, the away win would be tempting, but the safer bet is Brighton in the draw no bet market, especially considering Everton's home record and the fact Saturday's game comes on the opening weekend.

Newcastle vs Southampton (3pm)

Missing out on European qualification was a blow, but it gives Newcastle a better chance of attacking the Premier League in 2024-25.

They are almost always a tough prospect on home soil and should have too much quality and intensity for a Southampton side whose main aim will be survival.

Saints have returned to the top flight after just a one-year absence but they have lost some talented players in that time and could be in for a long hard season, starting with a mauling at the hands of the Magpies.

Nottingham Forest vs Bournemouth (3pm)

Away form was an issue for Bournemouth last term, winning just six times on the road and they may struggle to get the better of what should be a more resolute Nottingham Forest side.

While Forest have been busy in the transfer window, it is nowhere close to the kind of squad overhauls seen over the last couple of years and there is a more settled feel around the team.

This looks like a great opportunity for Forest to claim all three points on home soil.

West Ham vs Aston Villa (5.30pm)

West Ham and Aston Villa provided plenty of entertainment in the Premier League last season and there should be no shortage of goalmouth action when they open their new campaigns at the London Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both teams have scored in eight of the teams' last nine meetings and backing there to be at least four goals in another lively clash between the claret and blue clubs could pay off.
