Kylian Mbappe has reportedly written to Paris Saint-Germain informing the Ligue 1 champions he will not trigger an option in his contract to extend his stay until 2025.

His current deal runs until the end of next season in June 2024.

According to reports, PSG are unwilling to let their talisman leave for nothing — meaning he could depart the French capital this summer.

Should they fail to sell the forward or agree on an extension, he would be permitted to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of France in January.

Mbappe bagged 29 goals in Ligue 1 last season to end as the division's top scorer for a fifth year running and help guide the Parisians to an 11th league title.

But a disappointing Champions League campaign, which ended in a last-16 exit at the hands of Bayern Munich, coupled with a Coupe de France loss to Marseille, heaped pressure on boss Christophe Galtier.

And with Galtier expected to be fired in the coming days and Argentine World Cup winner Lionel Messi heading for MLS strugglers Inter Miami, a summer of huge change is expected at the Parc des Princes.

Real Madrid are the frontrunners to land Mbappe, after edging close to an agreement with the 24-year-old France captain last year before PSG chiefs convinced him to extend his time in Paris.

Los Blancos need a replacement for star striker Karim Benzema — who is joining the reigning Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad — and could now step up their chase for Mbappe's signature.
