- Manchester United have dropped to 14th in the Premier League table after a poor run of results
- Newcastle are up to fifth after three successive league wins
- Recommended bet:
Newcastle to win

Two teams at opposite ends of the Premier League form table lock horns when old rivals Manchester United and Newcastle United meet at Old Trafford on Monday.

December will have given Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim plenty of food for thought with his side having lost five games across all competitions.

There have been moments of promise, they thumped Everton 4-0 at the start of the month before recording a surprise away win in the Manchester derby, but the club are nonetheless in the lower echelons of the table.

Newcastle, meanwhile, moved up to fifth with their 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day and they have their sights set on the Champions League places.

Team news

Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are still sidelined for Manchester United, who will also be without suspended pair Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.

Harry Maguire could be handed the captain's armband and Marcus Rashford remains out of favour, so he is unlikely to feature.

Newcastle will be without Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles, Nick Pope and Emil Krafth while Sven Botman continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Tino Livramento should return from illness and could start.

The stats

Newcastle have won four successive matches in all competitions, scoring 14 goals in the process.

Star forward Alexander Isak is in top form and has bagged seven Premier League goals in December.

It has, however, been a tricky month for Manchester United, who have lost five fixtures in December, losing their last two games against Bournemouth and Wolves without scoring.

Manchester United have collected just 13 points in nine home fixtures in this season's Premier League.

Prediction

The goals have started to flow for Newcastle, who will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing an unsettled and out-of-form Manchester United side on Monday.

The Magpies have won their last four matches in all competitions, beating Leicester and Ipswich 4-0 in the Premier League before a 3-0 thrashing of Aston Villa last time out. They were also 3-1 winners against Brentford in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Eddie Howe's side have lost just one match in December and held Liverpool to a pulsating 3-3 draw at the start of the month, so they have to be considered contenders for the top four as the year draws to a close.

As for Manchester United, they would welcome simply being in the top half and Amorim will likely be keen to get into the new year and the January transfer window.

United have lost successive league games to Bournemouth and Wolves without scoring and it is hard to see past a win for visitors Newcastle at a nice price.
