Watson appeals over Commonwealth Cup call

Trainer Archie Watson has lodged an appeal following Dragon Symbol's demotion from first place in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

The three-year-old looked to have the race in the bag when jockey Oisin Murphy steered him home by a head in front of Campanelle, saddled by Frankie Dettori.

However, the stewards said there was interference in the last furlong and reversed the result giving Campanelle and American trainer Wesley Ward the win for a second successive year.

They concluded the careless riding "had improved Dragon Symbol's placing" and "the distance lost by Campanelle, who was taken notably off her intended line and bumped on a minimum of two occasions, equated to more than the head by which she was beaten".

Watson has now launched an appeal with the hearing set for July 1, under the auspices of the British Horseracing Authority.

John Leeper set for Sandown date

John Leeper will aim to get over his disappointing run in the Epsom Derby earlier this month when he races in the Insurance Services Gala Stakes at Sandown next Friday.

Much was expected of the Ed Dunlop-trained colt, who is the son of the unbeaten Frankel. However, inexperience showed as he dropped away in the home straight to finish 20 lengths behind.

"All being well and everything being equal, we're probably going to go to Sandown next Friday in a Listed race over a mile and a quarter and we'll see how we get on there," said Dunlop.

"He was a bit keen at Epsom and Frankie suggested we drop him back in trip, this seems an ideal race."

Miss Amulet set for Newmarket return

Ken Condon says Miss Amulet should have a stab in the July Cup at Newmarket next month. The three-year-old has endured a torrid year with bad weather scuppering her chances in the big races.

Her only outing came at the Curragh in May where she finished well down the order, nine-and-a-half lengths behind the winner Empress Josephine

"It was obviously very disappointing," Condon said of Miss Amulet's most recent run. "I rang her owner Michael Tabor on Friday just as we were taking cover from biblical rain.

"But we'll aim for the July Cup next, two weeks on Saturday."

Tregoning eyes Bunbury Cup for Perotto

Trainer Marcus Tregoning says Perotoo's next likely destination will be the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket in July.

It was a brilliant Royal Ascot for the three-year-old who triumphed in the 29-strong field Britannia Stakes - his first attempt at the mile.

Further targets are on the horizon but, for now, the focus will be on a trip to Newmarket.

Tregoning said: "Perotto needs a few to come out to get in the Bunbury Cup - but he's taken his race extremely well, and that's the likely race he'll go for next.

"As long as he gets in, he'll be off a low weight. I think he's ante-post favourite for the race, and he should be on that form.

"There's not really a suitable race over a mile now - that (the Bunbury Cup) would be a stepping stone to Goodwood, where we'll go afterwards."
