Fresh off the back of a bumper festive schedule, the January transfer window opens as teams look to fine-tune their squads.

While it may seem unwise to make too many alterations mid-season, Chelsea's world-record signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica last winter proves that clubs are prepared to do big deals at this time of year should they come along.

And with everything still to play for this term, January 2024 should be no different.

When does the January transfer window open?

The January transfer window opens on Monday, January 1, 2024 for teams across England, Scotland, Wales and most of Europe.

It opens one day later in Spain and Italy.

British clubs can also negotiate with overseas players whose contracts run out in the summer of 2024 about an end-of-season free transfer from the beginning of this window.

Some deals may be agreed in advance of January but will only formally go through at the start of the month.

When does the January transfer window close?

The majority of January transfer windows will close on Wednesday, January 31, with the Bundesliga window extended to February 1.

The Premier League and LaLiga windows will close at 11pm, while Serie A's will shut at 7pm. The German window will close at 5pm the following day.

Big deals to look out for

Newcastle are set to be among the most active clubs in the January window as they aim to cover the 10-month absence of Sandro Tonali.

Loan moves are likely to be Toon's priority, with Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips and Paris Saint-Germain's Huge Ekitike said to be priority targets.

Phillips' future is perhaps the biggest talking point heading into the window, with Juventus also said to be keen.

The England midfielder needs playing time ahead of Euro 2024 and is surely set to leave the Etihad.

Tottenham are also reported to be chasing a loan deal for the former Leeds playmaker, while they are also likely to sign a centre-back after Micky van de Ven suffered a serious hamstring injury.

Ivan Toney is another player who could be on the move come the end of his eight-month ban.

The striker has just 18 months left on his Brentford deal and is attracting interest from Arsenal and Chelsea but Bees manager Thomas Frank says he will not be leaving next month.
