James Tilley strike earns point for AFC Wimbledon
James Tilley’s strike rescued a point for promotion-chasing AFC Wimbledon as they drew 1-1 with Swindon at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
Harry Smith was put through on goal by Joel Cotterill in the ninth minute, and Swindon’s top scorer made no mistake, drilling the ball into the bottom left corner for his ninth of the season.
Omar Bugiel had a golden opportunity to equalise after getting on the end of a Dons free-kick, but his header did not test Dan Barden.
Tilley fired a powerful long-range shot straight at the Robins goalkeeper as the hosts applied the pressure after half-time.
Cotterill took aim from distance moments later, and his attempt was just inches away from finding the bottom left corner.
Tilley got his side back on level terms in the 56th minute after smashing in Josh Neufville’s superb looping cross at the far post.
Swindon had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Abigail Byrne as the half progressed.
Neufville went through on goal from the resulting Dons break, but his shot was blocked, and Tilley’s follow-up was deflected behind for a corner.
The Dons thought they had scored a 90th-minute winner, but it was disallowed for a foul in the build-up, and the game finished 1-1.
