Self-belief is key

Bastian Schweinsteiger claims Anthony Martial can be one of the best forwards around — if he believes in himself.

Despite an injury-hit start to the campaign, Martial has netted twice and provided two assists in five Premier League appearances for Manchester United this term.

And Schweinsteiger, who was at Old Trafford when the Frenchman arrived from Monaco in 2015, is keen to see his old team-mate kick on and live up to expectations.

Speaking to MUTV, the former Germany international, 38, said: "His potential is immense.

"With him, you need to give him confidence. But you also need to push him sometimes, you know, and then he can be one of the best players.

"He has to understand that first — and that's the job of the coaches and also the team-mates.

"If you play with someone like him, you want to see the quality of this player all the time. You expect it because you know what this player is able to do.

"At the end of the day, what matters for him is goals and assists."

Endrick is the Real deal

Real Madrid have finalised a deal to sign highly-rated Brazilian teenager Endrick from Palmeiras.

Confirming the 16-year-old starlet will move to the Bernabeu in 2024, the Spanish giants said: "Endrick and his family have reached an agreement whereby the player will be able to join Real Madrid when he reaches the age of maturity in July 2024.

"Until then, Endrick will continue his training at Palmeiras. The player will travel to Madrid in the coming days to visit the facilities of our club."

Chelsea, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain were also reportedly interested in the forward, who became the youngest player to feature in a senior game for Palmeiras when he faced Coritiba in October aged 16 years, two months and 16 days.

Devastated

Armando Broja has vowed to bounce back after suffering a season-ending injury.

The Chelsea striker, 21, will spend the rest of the campaign on the sidelines having ruptured the ACL in his right knee during a pre-season friendly with Aston Villa.

Broja left the pitch on a stretcher during the first half of the 1-0 defeat last Sunday following a collision with Villa defender Ezri Konsa.

And with surgery required to repair the damage, the Albania international faces a long road back to action.

Writing on Instagram, Broja said: "Devastated to be ending 2022 in this way.

"It's been difficult to process everything over the past few days, but I am determined to come back even stronger and better than before.

"Everyone has their own journey to the top, this is just a minor setback for the good things to come in the future.

"Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support. It means a lot and I appreciate them all. I will be back soon."

Room for improvement

Amy Turner wants more from Tottenham after the WSL winter break
Amy Turner wants more from Tottenham after the WSL winter break

Amy Turner admits Tottenham need to take a long, hard look at themselves during the Women's Super League winter break.

A 3-0 home reverse against Everton last night leaves Spurs eighth in the table after three wins and six defeats.

And Turner, 31, has urged her team-mates to use the time away to ensure they return focused and firing for the second half of the season.

She said: "I'm just disappointed really. I think we need to have a long, hard look at ourselves.

"We didn't show up for the first 20 minutes [against Everton] and it's not good enough. We can't keep conceding the goals that we've been conceding.

"Now it's about accountability and everyone taking it for their own performances really. We're disappointed because we know we can give a lot more.

"We want to do more, train harder and do whatever it takes to get ourselves out of this situation. We need to be mentally stronger and more resilient to think we're going to get goals.

"Now's not the time to start pointing fingers at each other. Now's the time to look at our own game and what we're doing wrong."

It's Hall about versatility

Chelsea academy graduate Lewis Hall is happy to play wherever Graham Potter needs him to.

The versatile 18-year-old has featured twice for the Blues under Potter this term, in the Carabao Cup defeat at Manchester City and 1-0 reverse against Newcastle in the Premier League.

But while the club's fans primarily know him as a left-sided defender, Hall rose through the ranks at Cobham in midfield.

The Slough-born youngster said: "I prefer playing as a No8, where I can go box to box, but the last couple of years I’ve been playing on the left, whether it's as wing-back or full-back.

"Wherever I'm asked to play, I've just got to do my best.

"I have my preferences but it's a big jump from academy to senior football, so getting any minutes wherever I play is a blessing."

Staying put

Leon King has signed a new long-term deal with Rangers.

The club have not revealed the exact length of the contract for the 18-year-old defender, who has made 26 first-team appearances, including 19 this season.

But King, a Scotland Under-21s international, was delighted to get it over the line. He said: "I'm extremely happy to sign a long-term extension, it's amazing for me and my family.

"It's something I have always wanted to do, play for this club, and I’m glad it is continuing.

"I've been a fan of the club ever since I was born. My whole family are Rangers fans and I love this club, so it was a no-brainer."
