The curtain has come down on the European Championship group stage and there have been plenty of standout performances across the competition’s 36 matches to date.

But which players have posted the best numbers at Euro 2020?

We’ve dug into the data to put together our statistical team of the tournament so far.

Goalkeeper – Danny Ward (Wales)

Heading into the tournament, it wasn’t clear who would start between the sticks for Wales.

But now there’s little doubt that Danny Ward is the undisputed No1 for Rob Page’s side.

Given a surprise start in their group opener against Switzerland, the Leicester shot-stopper has arguably been his team’s player of the tournament after a number of stunning saves helped the Welsh escape Group A.

Only Jordan Pickford and Gianluigi Donnarumma have a better save percentage than his 87.5% – though both have faced less than one shot on target per 90 minutes.

Ward, on the other hand, is dealing with 5.33 shots per 90 — the third most at Euro 2020.

Right-back – Joakim Maehle (Denmark)

Atalanta full-back Joakim Maehle rounded off a memorable group stage showing with a superb goal in the 4-1 win over Russia as Denmark secured progress into the round of 16.

We’re getting a little creative with his inclusion given he’s played as a left wing-back for the Danes, but he primarily plays on the right at club level.

The versatile 24-year-old has been one of the standout performers at the Euros.

He’s currently first for progressive carries (39), second for progressive carrying distance (769m), 10th for carries into the final third (nine) and first for carries into the penalty area (eight).

Maehle is the definition of a modern-day full-back.

Dejan Lovren has been hitting new heights for Croatia at the European Championship

Centre-back – Dejan Lovren (Croatia)

A surprise inclusion.

In the one game Croatia lost, Dejan Lovren didn’t start. He then returned to theteam and they claimed four points from matches against the Czech Republic and Scotland.

Every centre-back pairing needs one aggressive, dominant defender and Lovren fits the bill.

No player with a minimum of 150 minutes at the tournament attempted more defensive aerial duels than Lovren per 90 (6.99). The former Liverpool man is winning 5.13 of these duels, too.

We have the brute, now we need the beauty.

Centre-back – Aymeric Laporte (Spain)

For someone who only recently switched allegiances, Aymeric Laporte looks right at home in this Spain side.

The Manchester City centre-back featured in all three games as Luis Enrique’s side kept two clean sheets and conceded just one goal.

However, it was with the ball that the French-born left-footer really impressed.

For starters, he’s in the top three players for passes attempted (252) and he’s ranked first for pass completion, finding a team-mate with a staggering 98.9% of his attempts. Laporte is also in Euro 2020’s top 10 players for progressive passing distance (1592m).

Left-back – Leonardo Spinazzola (Italy)

Roma full-back Leonardo Spinazzola is yet to register an assist, but he’s been a revelation down the left flank for Italy.

He ranks joint second along with Kylian Mbappe and Breel Embolo for carries into the penalty area (seven) and he didn’t even play in the win over Wales. Had he started, he’d more than likely top the list ahead of Maehle.

His desire to attack the outside is what allows Lorenzo Insigne to cut inside and make an impact. They’re one of the most effective duos in the tournament.

Pierre-Emile Hojberg has enjoyed a sensational tournament so far for Denmark

Centre midfield – Pierre-Emile Hojberg (Denmark)

Tottenham powerhouse Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been among the leading performers at the Euros and was one of the first names on this list.

He’s joint-top for most assists (three) and key passes (nine) in the competition. The 25-year-old also ranks third for passes into the penalty area (eight) and progressive passes (28).

Hojberg is also the outright leader for shot-creating actions (18) — the midfielder has been the driving force behind Denmark’s resurgence in Group B.

Centre midfield – Jorginho (Italy)

A divisive player at club level, Jorginho is one of the stars of the show on the international stage.

Italy have been utterly dominant so far at the Euros and the Chelsea maestro has been instrumental for Roberto Mancini’s side. He’s been the one constant in midfield throughout the group stage.

Jorginho has made 14 interceptions, putting him in the top five for this particular metric when compared with his fellow midfielders.

He is also in the top 10 for progressive passes (20), shot-creating actions (11) and through balls (two).

Centre midfield – Georginio Wijnaldum (Netherlands)

Only Cristiano Ronaldo (five) has more goals than Georginio Wijnaldum (three) at the Euros.

The Dutch captain has three in three appearances and he’s been the perfect foil for whichever two forwards Frank de Boer has selected.

Given license to roam as an attacking midfielder, Paris Saint-Germain’s newest signing looks to be a goal threat whenever the ball is in the final third.

He’s top for non-penalty goals (three), third for shots in total (10) and fourth for shots on target (four).

Gareth Bale has been Wales' creative lynchpin at Euro 2020

Right wing – Gareth Bale (Wales)

Gareth Bale has yet to get off the mark but he’s been one of the most influential players of the group stage.

The Real Madrid attacker ranks fifth for passes into the penalty area (seven), fourth for through balls (two) and 10th for shot-creating actions (11).

Furthermore, only Hojberg and Switzerland’s Steven Zuber (three) have more assists than Bale (two). Wales only scored three goals in their three matches, so that represents a healthy return from their captain.

He’s perfected his role as a creator and it is only a matter of time before he finds the back of the net himself.

Left wing – Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

The top scorer and a record-breaker.

Cristiano Ronaldo is now the highest goalscorer in European Championship history (14), as well as leading the way for the most goals in World Cup and European Championship history combined (29).

The Juventus star is also joint-top for most goals scored by a men’s international footballer, with 109.

To say he’s had a successful Euro 2020 would be something of an understatement.

Portugal scored seven goals in the group of death, also known as Group F, with the 36-year-old scoring five and assisting another.

Centre forward - Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

Romelu Lukaku is joint-top for non-penalty goals at the Euros with three strikes to date.

Remarkably, those three goals arrived from just four shots on target.

Manager Roberto Martinez hasn’t built the Belgium system around the Inter Milan star, he’s just making sure his No9 is able to get involved.

That’s why Lukaku is regularly popping up in wide areas on the right flank. He wasn’t credited with an assist for it, but his play prior to Kevin De Bruyne’s goal against Denmark was vital to conjuring that opportunity.

A creator and a goalscorer, there is surely plenty more to come from Belgium’s powerful forward when the European Championship knockout stages get under way.
