England put in a dismal defence of their 50-over world title and their attempt at becoming back-to-back T20 World Cup champions has also gotten off to a rocky start.

After their first match against Scotland was rained out, Jos Buttler’s men were outclassed by Australia in their second game and now their chances of progressing beyond the pool could be out of their hands.

They are looking to get their campaign back on track when they take on Oman, who have already been eliminated after defeats to both Scotland and Australia.

Team news

Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Mark Wood’s respective places in the England team all look in trouble after poor displays against Australia.

Ben Duckett and Reece Topley are knocking on the door, while Sam Curran can rightfully feel dismayed that he has not had any opportunities given that he won Player of the Tournament at the last edition of this event.

Oman’s Mohammad Nadeem is 41 years old and may be recalled for what could be his final game at this level.

The stats

Will Jacks’ highest T20I score in his England career thus far was the 40 that he made on debut in 2022.

Oman’s Bilal Khan has taken 15 wickets in his last 10 outings and has only failed to take a wicket in two of those games

Jofra Archer had figures of 1/28 from his four overs against Australia and his overall figures since returning from injury stand at 4-99 from 13.5 overs, averaging 24.75 with an economy of 7.15.

Prediction

England’s batting line-up failed to cover themselves in glory against Australia, with their openers the only real exception to that rule.

Phil Salt made 37 from 23 balls, finishing just five runs short of captain and fellow opening batter Jos Buttler in the race to be the team’s top run scorer.

Salt now has knocks of 37, 45, 48, 68 and 75 in his last nine T20 innings and a replication of those efforts would put him in with a very solid chance of being England’s top run scorer.

The opposition’s opening batter had innings of 56 and 41 in Oman’s first two games, which shows they tend to allow their rivals a fast start and Salt is fancied to make one here.
