Southgate hails Bellingham mentality after Italy masterclass
Gareth Southgate praised Jude Bellingham after the 20-year-old's superb display in the 3-1 win over Italy helped England book their spot at Euro 2024.
The Real Madrid starlet won a first-half penalty at Wembley Stadium, which was converted by Harry Kane, and then assisted Marcus Rashford after the break to put the Three Lions 2-1 ahead.
And after the Italian press labelled Bellingham a player who "seems to be the best in the world", the England boss talked up the midfielder's mentality.
He said: "We played against a top nation [Italy].
"It was a high-level game, from both teams. So I was really pleased with the way we controlled the game and with Jude, his mentality is incredible for his age.
"To have such an impact at such a young age, to show such maturity.
"But he also shows humility, so we're very lucky to have Jude."
Southgate was also questioned about Bellingham's skills as a leader, to which he claimed the ex-Borussia Dortmund ace has instigated positive changes in the England side.
He added: "Well he's been a catalyst [in changing the mindset].
"I just see the way he carries himself and the way he plays on the field, which he has had since he walked through the door.
"Plus the power in his play. That gives us something when we're in tight situations and suddenly he can wriggle out of things.
"And of course, Phil [Foden] did that brilliantly tonight, albeit in a slightly different way.
"But the belief Jude has, the willingness to engage with the crowd, they are rare traits in someone so young."
England conclude their Euro 2024 qualifiers next month when they host Malta and travel to North Macedonia.
