League Two Doncaster caused a third-round Emirates FA Cup upset with a penalty shootout victory at Hull after the game finished 1-1 following extra-time.

Harry Clifton scored the winning spot-kick after Mason Burstow and Alfie Jones missed for the Championship side.

Luke Molyneux had given Doncaster the lead after 51 minutes but Hull equalised in the 80th minute when Gustavo Puerto followed up Burstow’s low hit that struck the base of the left post.

Joe Ironside missed Rovers’ first penalty of the shootout, but Grant McCann’s side kept their nerve to claim a significant scalp.

The hosts lacked Doncaster’s energy from the outset but nonetheless dominated possession in the first half.

Joao Pedro’s free-kick in first-half injury-time required a sharp stop from Ted Sharman-Lowe after which Fin Burns made a mess of the follow-up.

Abu Kamara should also have done better three minutes later when he missed the target from the right of the penalty area.

Rovers were more expansive after the restart and scored the opening goal their defensive fortitude warranted after 51 minutes.

Doncaster broke quickly through Joe Sbarra and James Maxwell, who threaded a neat low ball towards Molyneux on the right.

Hull left-back Ryan Giles lost concentration with a weak first touch, off which Molyneux seized control before guiding the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Home supporters might have expected their side to rally, but it never looked likely until well-placed Puerta side-footed home.

Sharman-Lowe then rode his luck two minutes later when he floored Kamara outside the penalty box.

But referee Sunny Singh Gill, much to the ire of Hull fans, felt the clear foul was only worthy of a yellow card.

Extra-time was a non-event, though Sharman-Lowe did well to tip Jones’ goalbound strike from the edge of the 18-yard box over the crossbar.

Sharman-Lowe also made a vital save off Jones in the shootout, after which Clifton scored the winning spot-kick to confirm Doncaster’s place in the fourth round.
