Reece James has been charged by the Football Association for using "insulting or abusive" language towards a referee during Sunday's Premier League game against Aston Villa.

The England international — currently out with a hamstring injury — reportedly approached match official Jarred Gillett in the tunnel as his side fell to a 1-0 defeat.

James, who is expected to be back to full fitness next month, could now face a ban upon his return to action.

A statement read: "Reece James has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following Chelsea's Premier League game against Aston Villa on Sunday, September 24.

"It's alleged that the defender used improper and/or insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official in the tunnel after the game. Reece James has until Friday, September 29, to provide a response to this charge."

James picked up his injury in August having played in Chelsea's opening game of the Premier League season against Liverpool.

Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino highlighted the importance of the 23-year-old coming back "stronger".

He said: "It's a sad moment because he is our captain and he was so excited to be our captain and full of energy.

"The good thing is it's not a big issue but the most important thing now is to try to work really hard to try to anticipate problems and be sure that when he starts to play again he is fully fit and stronger than before."

Chelsea are next in action against Fulham on Monday night and will be short of options at right-back after the sending off of Malo Gusto against Villa.
