Chelsea maintained their 100 per cent start under new manager Sonia Bompastor with a comfortable 3-0 win over Liverpool at St Helens.

Goals from Mayra Ramirez and Guro Reiten late in the first half set up victory before Aggie Beever-Jones completed the scoring late on.

The win took the champions back within a point of Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City – while also boasting a game in hand still – and left Liverpool still searching for their first success at their new home.

Bompastor has now overseen six wins from as many games in the competition and, with 13 goals coming in their last three outings, they really seem to be hitting their stride.

Both sides threatened in a fast start to the game with Liverpool’s Taylor Hinds having a long-range effort deflected narrowly wide and Ramirez seeing a shot blocked.

Maiko Hermano then forced a good save from Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws before Ceri Holland blasted an attempt well wide at the opposite end.

Chelsea began to look the stronger side as the game settled and Sandy Baltimore and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd both tested Laws.

The opener came in the 37th minute after the ball was deflected into the path of Rytting Kaneryd and the Swede smashed a shot against the bar. Reiten’s follow-up was blocked by Gemma Bonner but Ramirez was on hand to fire home at the third attempt.

The Blues then took a firm grip five minutes later after an error by Laws, who, out of goal and under pressure from Ramirez, passed straight to Reiten.

The Norwegian made no mistake as she guided the ball into the empty net.

Chelsea’s Lucy Bronze, returning to the side after missing last week’s emphatic win over Everton, was withdrawn at half-time and Liverpool sensed a chance to get back into the game.

Leanne Kiernan caused problems and shot wide after being teed up by Holland while Jasmine Matthews and Hinds got into good positions only to fail to trouble Hannah Hampton.

Holland did test Hampton from a tight angle but Liverpool did not have enough players forward to to take advantage of the rebound.

Chelsea completed the job in the last minute as Ramirez cut back for Wieke Kaptein and her tame shot was powerfully diverted into goal by Beever-Jones.
