Bromley’s first Carabao Cup tie ended in a 2-1 south London derby defeat to AFC Wimbledon as Joe Pigott grabbed the winner at Hayes Lane.

The Dons came from behind against the EFL newcomers, who they face again at the same venue in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday.

After Wimbledon started the brighter, Bromley struck first against the run of play after 19 minutes when Bes Topalloj’s exquisite left-wing cross to the back post was swept in by Levi Amantchi.

Wimbledon soon levelled as Myles Hippolyte picked out Josh Kelly with a nicely-flighted pass and after the forward had left Lewis Leigh for dead, he fired confidently past Sam Long.

The Dons completed their comeback shortly after the hour mark as Isaac Ogundere’s cross was nodded across goal by James Tilley for Pigott to apply the finishing touch – his first goal since returning to the club on loan from Leyton Orient.

Long then did well to deny Pigott while Bromley made a quadruple substitution in an effort to take the tie to penalties.

However, Johnnie Jackson’s men ultimately held on to reach the second round, thanks in no small part to Owen Goodman’s superb save to thwart Kamarl Grant.
