Blackburn vs Burnley predictions: Goals hard to come by in Lancashire derby
- Burnley are second in the Championship, just three points behind Leeds
- Blackburn are outside the play-off positions only on goal difference
- Recommended bet: Under 2.5 goals
Bragging rights are up for grabs at Ewood Park on Saturday when fierce rivals Blackburn and Burnley face off in the Championship.
Rovers are sitting just one place outside of the play-off positions heading into the contest, behind sixth-placed West Brom on goal difference, while the Clarets are riding high in second, with just three points the gap to leaders Leeds.
Team news
Blackburn's Todd Cantwell missed the draw against Leeds on New Year's Day due to illness but is expected to return to the matchday squad.
Scott Wharton, Harry Pickering, Hayden Carter and Lewis Travis remain sidelined because of injury, while Arnor Sigurdsson and Zak Gilsenan are closing in on a return although this match is likely to come too soon.
The Clarets remain without the services of Jordan Beyer, Aaron Ramsey, Enock Agyei, Manuel Benson, Nathan Redmond and Mike Tresor.
Hannibal Mejbri is suspended after picking up a red card in the draw against Stoke last time out, while Bashir Humphreys, Josh Laurent and Zian Flemming are all pushing for a recall after dropping to the bench for that clash.
The stats
Blackburn are on a four-game run with a victory, recording two defeats and two draws.
Rovers have the sixth-best home record in the Championship, taking 23 points from 12 matches – only Leeds, Watford, Sheffield United and Sunderland have more home wins.
There have been under 2.5 goals in 13 of Blackburn's last 15 fixtures, with both teams scoring in just three of those matches.
Burnley boast the best defensive record in the league, conceding just nine times, while they are unrivalled in clean sheets with 16 to their name.
The Clarets have collected the most points on the road this term, 25 in total, while there have been less than three goals in 12 of their last 13 away outings in all competitions.
Prediction
It can generally be tricky to pick a winner when it comes to a derby and that is the case here, with Blackburn's strong home form seemingly countered by Burnley's impressive away record.
Both teams have aspirations of getting promoted, with the Clarets looking to go up automatically and Rovers likely having to settle for a place in the play-offs if they want to return to the Premier League.
Neither side will want to lose this one and that could make for a tight, gritty encounter between the pair, with less than three goals in the match looking like the best option.
Burnley's superb defensive displays have been on full show and it will be extremely difficult for Blackburn, who failed to score in their last home match, to break them down.
With under 2.5 goals becoming a staple for the duo over the last couple of months, there looks to be a strong chance this selection can land again, as it has done in five of the last six meetings.
