Tammy Abraham is chasing his second trophy with Roma as Jose Mourinho's men eye Europa League glory.

Yet the England striker has not found goals easy to come by during a campaign in which he has faced increased competition for a starting spot.

Inevitably, there has been speculation regarding a return home, with several Premier League clubs linked with a summer swoop.

Ahead of the first leg of Roma's Europa League semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen, we take a look at what the future might hold for the England international.

Fierce competition

Abraham's first season in Italy was a great success. In total, he scored 27 goals in 53 games for Roma.

Nine of those strikes came in the Europa Conference League, helping Mourinho's side win the newly-created competition.

Another European trophy is now up for grabs but the ex-Chelsea striker is no longer such a vital member of the Giallorossi line-up.

Of his 47 appearances this season, 32 have seen him as a starter, with 15 cameos coming from the bench.

Roma added to their attacking options last summer, signing Paulo Dybala and Andrea Belotti, which has naturally reduced the number of minutes available to Abraham.

Mourinho faith

With Mourinho having more options to work with, any striker will need to score regularly to remain in his team.

Abraham has only netted nine times in Serie A this season, assisting seven more. Considering his lack of goals, his manager has kept a reasonable amount of faith in him and has consistently presented opportunities.

He has recently spoken about his relationship with Mourinho, who gave the green light to a £34million transfer to Roma back in 2021.

Abraham, 25, said: "He expects me to work hard, to lift my team-mates and the fans and that's when I play my best football.

"He's the kind of person who likes to focus on the next game and if you think too far ahead you miss out key information and bits of detail.

"It has been a good season and hopefully we can lift silverware at the end of it."

Euro hopes

Tammy Abraham has won 11 caps for England

With Roma through to the semi-finals of the Europa League and a place in the top four also a possibility, the club have two stabs at Champions League qualification.

From a personal perspective, though Abraham will get nowhere near the numbers he reached last season, there is still the chance to break into double figures and score some important goals.

As for his future, much will depend on the events of the next few weeks. A place in the Champions League would be an incentive for the centre forward to stay and for Stadio Olimpico chiefs to keep him.

Should Roma miss out, then there could be the temptation for them to cash in on a player who would attract a premium fee from England.

There is also the possibility that Mourinho might leave, having been linked with Paris Saint-Germain. Such a move could well have an impact on Abraham's future.

As an England international, the proximity of Euro 2024 is another factor that may persuade him to return to the Premier League.

There is now stiff competition for a place in the squad, alongside Harry Kane. The likes of Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins and Callum Wilson are all in fine form.

Abraham's time in Rome has broadly been a success but regular playing time and visibility are likely to be crucial to his hopes of making Gareth Southgate's squad.
