Thomas Tuchel denied arrogance from his Bayern Munich side after they shockingly exited the DFB-Pokal to third-tier side Saarbrucken.

Bayern were left stunned after a last-minute goal from Marcel Gaus consigned them to a 2-1 defeat and an embarrassing exit.

Thomas Muller set the German champions on their way to a routine victory but the hosts deservedly fought back and got on level terms just before the break through Patrick Sontheimer.

Tuchel said: "We weren't arrogant or took it lightly.

"There are 100 explanations or none. It feels strange.

"Everyone who says we have to win here is right. There's no clever explanation, we are extremely disappointed."

Harry Kane was an unused substitute but it was a strong Bayern team featuring Muller, Leroy Sane and Manuel Neuer.

Bayern have now been knocked out in the second round  of the competition three times in the last four seasons.

Sporting director Christoph Freund had some strong words to say on the defeat: "This is just unacceptable, I don't understand how you can play such a bad first half.

"No courage, no speed, aggressiveness — you can't compete with any opponent like that.

"The disappointment is huge."

Bayern, who travel to Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, also lost Matthijs de Ligt to a knee injury early in the match.

Tuchel added on his defender: "We hope he comes back with a good diagnosis. It's looking okay at the moment.

"The same capsule on the same knee is extremely painful. But we don't have any results or diagnosis yet."
