- Huddersfield are winless in five league matches
- Recommended bet: Sunderland to win and over 2.5 goals

Sunderland’s Championship playoff ambitions suffered a setback with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Plymouth, but the Black Cats will be confident they can get back on track at home to Huddersfield.

Tony Mowbray’s side went into these midweek fixtures within two points of the Championship top-six and they have been pretty reliable at home, winning five eight games.

While Sunderland harness promotion hopes, Huddersfield may face a tough task just to stay in the division.

The Terriers have won only one of their last 11 Championship fixtures, which is why Darren Moore’s side have just three teams below them in the standings.

Team news

Sunderland remain with Ajibola Alese, Corry Evans, Jay Matete, Dennis Cirkin and Timothee Pembele while Chelsea loanee Mason Burstow, Chris Rigg and Jewison Bennette are doubts.

Huddersfield have their own injury concerns with Loick Ayina, Jack Rudoni, Patrick Jones, Oliver Turton and Danny Ward all ruled out.

The Terriers may also be without Josh Ruffels and Kian Harratt, both of whom must be assessed.

The stats

Sunderland have won five of their last seven home games in the Championship, scoring five in victory over Southampton and netting three against Norwich and Birmingham.

Publicidad

Over 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in six of their eight home league outings this season.

The Black Cats picked up four points from last season’s Championship double-header against Huddersfield, who are winless in five games.

In fact, the Terriers have won only one of their last 11 league matches and they have picked up only six points from their eight away assignments.

Moore’s men have scored only 15 goals in 17 league games this season, firing blanks in four of their last seven outings.

Prediction

Sunderland were wasteful in Saturday’s 2-0 reverse at Plymouth but they have earned plenty of praise for their exciting, front foot football this season and they should have more joy at home to Huddersfield.

Mowbray inherits a young squad, so some inconsistencies can be expected, but they play with great energy and they ought to prove too lively for the toiling Terriers.

While the promotion-chasing Black Cats have won five of their eight home games and racked up 16 goals, Huddersfield have only three teams below them in the Championship and they have struggled on their travels.

The visitors have won only once in eight away trips and they have lost three of their last four away games, which includes 4-1 defeats at Birmingham and Leeds.

So Sunderland should record a third straight home league win and this could be an entertaining affair given their only clean sheet in seven league games came at a Swansea side that had been reduced to ten men inside 30 minutes.
