- Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson has lost five of seven visits to Millwall as a manager
- Millwall have won five of the last eight clashes between these two sides
- Recommended bet: Millwall to win

Millwall produced a statement performance on the opening day of the Championship season with a 1-0 win at promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough.

The manner of the Lions' success was similar to that of Coventry’s at the Riverside in last season's 2022-23 play-offs, so it has undoubtedly made Millwall a side to watch in the opening weeks of the campaign.

They return to The Den on Saturday for their first home league game of the campaign and will be aiming to make their London home a fortress once again.

Team news

Millwall had a clean bill of health ahead of their trip to Middlesbrough last weekend and that should be the case once again.

Lions boss Gary Rowett rotated heavily for the midweek EFL Cup defeat to Reading, meaning a number of the hosts' first-choice players should be fresh for Saturday’s visit of Bristol City.

Bristol City will be without midfielder Alex Scott, who completed his big-money move to Premier League Bournemouth earlier this week.

The stats

Only QPR had fewer shots with five in the opening round of Championship fixtures than Bristol City.

The Robins also had the fewest touches in the opposition box with nine of any side in the division last weekend.

Publicidad

Nigel Pearson’s side conceded first in 13 of their 23 away trips last term.

Nigel Pearson takes his Bristol City side to Millwall on Saturday

Millwall conceded just seven equalising goals in 23 home matches in 2022-23.

The Lions registered 11 home league wins last season, while Bristol City have lost four of their last six away games in the Championship.

Prediction

Millwall suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Reading in the EFL Cup on Tuesday but they can quickly bounce back to form against Bristol City.

The Den has been a difficult place to visit for oppositon teams for some time now and Bristol City are not exactly the best travellers.

The Robins lost 10 times on the road last season and they will undoubtedly be weakened by the departure of talented teenager Scott.

City began the season with a 1-1 draw at home to Preston, but they managed the second-lowest number of shots and the lowest number of touches in the opposition box of any side in the Championship, which has to be a concern for boss Pearson.

Millwall have won five of the last eight meetings between the Championship rivals and look perfectly placed to take advantage of those shortcomings.

The Lions were aggressive early on at the Riverside before sitting back to defend their lead, and they can repeat the trick against the blunt Robins.
